I don't care how other people dress their kids. We are in an area where fashion isn't that important. My son (and the one due in Feb) will be wearing most of their clothes from Kohls and Target. Mainly kahki's, jeans, t-shirts, button downs and hoodies. Much more casual I guess. My son only owns tennis shoes.

That being said, I love the old man look for special occasions.

It's funny, that's what I love about dressing my son! People keep saying "I bet you hope this one is a girl so you can get all the cute clothes!" but I feel like little girl clothes look like little girl clothes while little boy clothes look like tiny sized man clothes, which I think is adorable. I dress my son mostly in slim jeans (he's skinny) and plain tshirts, polos, or henleys with cool cardigans or sweaters (like somebody said above, my son dresses a lot like my husband). He does wear a lot of hats but that's because he truly loves hats and glasses. I think he looks adorable.

@jape14: Just saw the tag while perusing this thread!

Definitely don't dress my toddler like a little man. I figure I have a limited time to dress him and better embrace it. I have no trouble finding cute stuff - we wear a lot of smocked outfits (bought from either resale sites, Zulily, Smocked Auctions, etc) - jon jons, bubbles, longalls. He also wears a lot of Mini Boden. I thought it would be SO hard to dress a boy, but I've found it's actually pretty easy once you find your groove with what stores work.

As others have said, I've noticed that finding outfits that are inexpensive that fit my/his "look" is not as easy as I think it is for little girls. For instance, I will see an adorable Baby Gap dress that would be perfect for casual wear. To find something comparably cute and affordable I usually have to go to Mini Boden and will end up paying at least double. As a result I have to be a pretty conscientious shopper and watch the sales!

I've noticed that most people in my life tend to dress their sons (I think subconsciously) like their husbands. For my son, we just noticed it the other day that most of his clothes are cargos/thermals/graphic tees- in fact he was nearly identical to my husband but completely on accident. Our cousins who are hipsters tend to dress their son with the suspenders/bow ties and hats (and rejected our offer of hand-me-downs because it was "not their style) and my sister and her husband tend to go preppy with their son, just like my bil. I guess you gravitate towards what you know.

I LOVE dressing my son. The clothes definitely aren't as cute as girl clothes, but this fall I am having fun layering with t-shirts, henleys, hoodies and vests (puffy and fleece - not sweater vests) - not all of them at the same time :silly: I like him to be comfy to move around and play, so we do a lot of soft pants - Carters has some boy jeggings that I think are adorable.

I don't dress DS like a little man at all and don't have any trouble finding him adorable clothes - I have gone pretty crazy with buying him clothes, actually! I'm a huge fan of smocked clothes - jon jons and longalls - which definitely look babyish to me. I get those on zulily, various Instagram/Facebook accounts, local stores, etc. I also find that boden, Janie and Jack, and Gymboree have more babyish items mixed in with the rest.

But I also love rompers and jon jons especially for the holidays. I usually find them on Zulily StellyBelly is a favorite and I think they look babyish.

@Reese: Agreed - I can't get irritated over how other people dress their babies! Even when it's not my own style, I love seeing little babies dressed up all different ways. Or just in a sleeper. Something about a newborn in a footed sleeper just sets off my baby fever like whoa. Then I remind myself I don't like newborns ;)

But I do understand getting a little frustrated when it is hard to find things that are your style in stores. I'm going through that right now! I am a huge fan of things that look babyish for boys and girls! I am going to petition Baby Gap to make their baby stuff in toddler sizes!

My son was a string bean most of his first year so it was hard to find long and lean clothing for him. We really liked the unisex leggings from Cotton On for him, and moccasins or Zutano booties, because they were the only shoes that stayed on - which I guess was borderline hipster, but it wasn't meant to be. We also liked Cotton On t-shirts and onesies because they were very soft and good quality. He wore little Polo rompers or polos with the 1 pair of jeans we could find to fit him for holidays, but generally - lets be real - he wore Carter's footie jammies during the day if we weren't going anywhere because why bother.

Though I love special occasion old-man clothes for little boys (sweater vests kill me), there is no way M could wear that daily. I really like H&M and Old Navy for classic baby boy clothes- carters is good too, but there is a LOT of animal patterned outfits (dogs, monkeys, frogs) so if you don't like that, it might be harder to find things.

I think there are great options for boys but I think they tend to be pricier (for stylish items) than girls clothes. I find you can get a lot of (nice) plain basics in the girl section while the boys section tends to be riddled with dogs and cars (not my style). I dress my LO (boy) like an old man, hipster and preppy depending on my mood and what we are doing that day. I think it just depends on your style and what you like. Nothing about how a child dresses irritates me. Even when it may not be my style.. Kids are cute. Period.

While I think it's a cute look, it's not something I'd dress my son in. That's just not our style. I'm not an "on-trend" dresser, so it would make zero sense for my kid to be. He's a t-shirt and jeans kind of kid....just like me and his Daddy.

There's definitely a way to differentiate your son's style without being overly "grown up." I very rarely shop at Carter's because that stuff is too young and matchy-matchy for my taste. I buy a lot of graphic tees from Instagram shops, I choose plain or simply-patterned shirts from Old Navy or Gap.
