We used the oxo tot cup, but I didn't like the trainer piece, it didn't really serve a purpose. We just used he open cup and it was easy to grip. I think the key is to just put. Tiny bit of liquid at a time because they will spill, but this will cut down on the mess. My son was pretty good at the open cup by about 14-15 months (he never used a sippy, just a straw cup and open cup).

I like the agent trainer cup that was mentioned above. She will have to close her lip over it to get it to work. And it has a lid, so you can put it in the diaper bag.

Yes, just keep trying! My first didn't really get it until he was closer to 2 1/2, my second is a pro at 21 months, I guess from watching his brother?!

I like the little Ikea plastic cups (~8 oz size)- I fill it with about a half inch of milk or water at a time to limit the flood if spilled.

We started practicing around when he turned 2- during bath time and when we brushed his teeth, times when it is ok for him to get soaked. It has taken about 4 months, but he is finally to the point where I feel comfortable giving him a cup and not expecting it to get everywhere.

Oxo Tot sells a training cup. D does ok with it, but still ends up with a lot of it down his shirt. I think it's just a matter of practice makes perfect.

@Mrs. Lion: We started with a shot glass, too. Basically any small cup will work, I think that helps.

Practice! We gave lo a shot glass to practice with and he can totally do it when he is in the mood (starting around 10 months).

Keep trying! LO does really well with open cups, but he still takes in too much and dribbles all over. It will take him a while to master.

In the meantime, LO never learned how to drink from a straw cup. I'm not sure if he just didn't like it. I tried for probably 3 months and finally gave up. I think with an open cup, the longer you try, the more she'll start to get a handle on closing her mouth in around it if she doesn't want to get all wet!

I think just keep trying. If anything, Avent sells a trainer cup that might help. We started with open cups fairly early and she took to it pretty quickly.

Just put her outside every time and let her figure it out? Haha, I don't know, but I know that L is totally clueless as well. She always wants to drink from our cup, but it just dribbles out her mouth.

I've been trying to teach DD (2yrs) to drink from a real cup, but she doesn't really get how to close her mouth on the cup. She just tends to tip it back with her mouth open, then all the water spills back out. We've tried telling her to close her mouth on it, and demonstrated for her. Any other tips on teaching her to close her mouth around the cup? Or do you think it'll just take time?
