Thanks for the feedback all. Honestly it's not the one glass of wine I worry about, which I know is probably OK.

It's going out for a weekend where we'll all be having multiple cocktails and getting tipsy. I think that's the issue. I'd like not to worry that a buzz is going to land me in the hospital.

On the plus side, no hangovers, I suppose. :)

I was on Lexapro and drank, occasionally a fair amount. No issues ever. This wasn't even on my radar, and I had multiple doctors during that period who all knew the medications I was taking and my drinking habits. I think it's fine to listen to your doctor.

I'm on lexapro and I drink. I don't get wasted or anything but a couple of cocktails never did anything. I honestly never worried about it.

I drank all the time on both lexapro and Zoloft. Not getting wasted, but a few glasses of wine over the course of the night. I'd definitely not go off your meds to drink. You can have a glass of wine on it. You get buzzed faster and a little more tired, but that's likely it. I just went through horrible withdrawal stopping Zoloft and I was on a low dose and weaned super slowly over the course of 2 months. Highly don't recommend just for a weekend of drinking.

I used to take lexapro for anxiety for almost 10 years, I stopped when I became pregnant and am breastfeeding so I'm waiting to take it again once I have stopped breastfeeding. I drank often, all my friends drink and we would go out often (it's easy when you don't have children!) and I was fine. I noticed, that for me, when I first started taking lexapro I would get buzzed faster than prior to taking medication and after a while, once my body adjusted, things seemed to go back to normal. You should take things slow to see how it goes for you and ask your doctor if you have any other concerns.

@Paddington10: I'm on Lexapro and drink. When I first went on it I was really nervous that if I drank I'd have a bad reaction so I started by one night nursing half a glass of wine. When that was fine, a few days later I slowly sipped a full glass. When that was fine, the next time I just drank a glass like a regular person. I've had several glasses of wine or a couple cocktails on occasion while on the Lexapro and haven't noticed any adverse reaction. I don't even think about it anymore.

That being said, this was only MY experience and how I decided to go about it; everyone has a different chemical makeup and reacts differently to various substances, so you have to do what you feel comfortable with.

For what it's worth I really wouldn't stop the meds just to have a few drinks. The withdrawal from stopping abruptly/for a short time would be worse than a hangover, and if they're helping you, the benefits should outweigh the risks!

I think drinking is fine as long as you don't go crazy - the patients I've seen with serotonin syndrome have been on MULTIPLE things that raise your serotonin at high doses. It's pretty rare. With a low dose and only 1 med and responsible drinking I wouldn't be concerned

ETA I would NOT go off the meds particularly not abruptly

Aghhhhh.
OK, so I have been taking Lexapro postpartum, and I will be honest: I long for a boozy night now and then, but I am petrified to drink wine.

So I have been TERRIFIED to drink because I googled it and the big bad internet says you can get serotonin syndrome, where your serotonin spikes and you basically have a seizure or...worse.

Here's the thing. My crowd of friends in my neighborhood likes to drink sometimes. Wine and pizza on a Friday night, dinners out with amazing cocktails, et cetera. And honestly, I am tired of abstaining. I miss that nice buzzy feeling every so often. Not a lot. Maybe once a week.

Next month, a group of us are going on a weekend trip to New York, and I know everyone will be boozing it up at fun cocktail bars. I am honestly considering going off my medication so I can also have fun and stop thinking about this. OR maybe I can drink on it, and I'm being an idiot and paranoid?

I know other people who are on it who have been able to drink. My doctor said it wasn't an issue. Of course, I didn't press him about precise quantity, not wanting to look like a lush. And I am not a lush -- but, when we go out, it's not one drink. Its a few over the course of a night, and I'd love to do that again and let loose every so often.

So, I ask you: Do I go off the meds? (I am on a very low dose to begin with). Can I drink normally on them (get buzzed every now and then? -- I am not talking about doing body shots off a bar).

Help?

(I take it for mild depression/anxiety).
