It depends on the equipment used. It used to be you should have a full bladder, but more and more offices are now using equipment where an empty bladder is best.

My advice, go in with a full bladder and if you don't need it, you can take care of that easy enough. But going in with an empty bladder and having to down water and wait and hour sounds like more hassle.

every time i've gone in, i have to give a sample right before, so i don't think i'll ever go into a U/S with a full bladder.

Yes, I was told to drink 8 oz of water every 15 minutes for an hour before my A/S. I definitely had a full bladder when I went in there!! I did get a inter-vaginal one after my A/S, for this one I had to alleviate before that one, it was a relief.

My doctor said I had to drink water before. I didn't take it seriously because I heard once the baby's bigger it's no big deal. But then she said that she was having trouble seeing everything because I didn't drink enough water. My theory is you can drink it, and if they don't want you to it's easier to pee it out then drink it and let it get into place.

I am always pounding water going into my OB appointments, but that's only so I can provide the required urine sample. And I basically have to explode when I do that, so there's no holding it until after the ultrasound ;) I've never had any problems getting the baby to show up on screen.

For both my ultrasounds this pregnancy (7w and 19w) they made me empty my bladder before starting. The tech said that they found having a full bladder doesn't increase baby movement or their ability to see the necessary things since today's equipment is so high tech. She said they have encountered several "accidents" when women had a full bladder because depending upon how the baby is laying they may need to push a little to get a good view.

I had gone before both ultrasounds as directed but when they did my 7w my bladder was already filling back up. For my 19w the tech had trouble seeing something so she pushed the probe a little which ended up making both me and baby jump so I was really glad to not have full bladder for that.

My docs office actually tells us we don't have to have a full bladder for the anatomy scan. They make me give a urine sample anyways as soon as I get there, so they would be out of luck :)

They didn't tell me to drink water but I did anyway, then they had me empty my bladder because it was too full! It is weird how some people seem to get told to have a full bladder and some don't.

They told me how many ounces of water to drink beforehand. I can't remember how many, but it was a lot. It was miserable b/c I had terrible morning sickness throughout my pregnancy, and keeping down water was always a major challenge.

I didn't have to drink a thing. There is really no reason to. I will say, I had a full bladder going in and baby was uncooperative. The tech asked if I want to pee. I did and baby showed us the goods. Lol

I have my 20-week anatomy scan this Friday and I remember something about drinking a lot of water beforehand. This was not mentioned to me when I made the appointment. Is it necessary? Were you required to do this before your anatomy scan?
