Good morning! So I figured out what to put with those straws...Target dollar spot hit the spot.

The little kids will get the silly straws, bug or space bandaids and light up spikey ring.

The big kids (ages 5/7/9/12) will get the straws, rings and a magic trick.

@Foodnerd81: so my brother uses that plastic dispenser all the time- it’s borrowed from my mom and says it leaks a little. So I’m going with juice boxes and mini water bottles. Raspberry ice dreams dashed for now lol!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: you could still do the raspberry ice
In plain water! But that’s not easier :silly:

I’m going to test out the straws with the cup size & lid I plan to get. If need be I can always cut them. Or if it’s just too much work then opt for smaller paper “water” cups. I’m pretty much set on bringing cold Spring water with me and using that in the dispenser and buying Trader Joe’s Apple juice that ranked high on taste and nutrition for the kids to drink when lunch is served.

When LO is a little older and we’re all more relaxed about what the kids drink- this is what I’m doing limeade with raspberry ice!!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: my 3 year old loves plain soda stream water too. It’s a special treat. But I can see a lot of kids getting upset about carbonation!

I like the straws. I think for kids water would be good option or a very watered down lemonade. I personally love izze drinks but my kids arent allowed carbonated drinks. Plus kids would waste drinks like that anyway

@kiddosc: Oh boy! LO makes soda stream plain water with his dad and had sparkling cider this past New Year. He loves the fizzy. I’d hate for a kid to try an Izze for the first time just dislike it and waste the drink.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I would stay away from fizzy drinks for the kids actually. I never give my kids seltzer or soda at that young age and when I let A try a sip at 3 years old, she freaked out because the bubbles hurt her tongue. I'd imagine most of the kids aren't used to carbonation and wouldn't like the fizzy drinks.

I'd just put water in the dispenser and some juice in a cooler.

I’m all about minimizing cleaning after bday party so I would personally do...

Juice boxes for kids
Water bottles for kids/adults
Tea for adults in container but water should be fine. It’s a kids party.

Straw in goody bag bc I agree the kids will just throw it everywhere. How old are the kids that are coming? Those straw things are fun and my kids love them but if the cup isn’t tall enough, it doesn’t work that well and they get frustrated (esp younger kids)there’s a lot of tilting involved to get the water out.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I love izze drinks. I don’t think most kids do, somemight, and I think it’s fine for them to drink it (unlike tea). I think that would be good in the cooler.

@Foodnerd81: what’s your take on Izze drinks? Good for both adults and kids? I don’t like seltzer water or LaCroix and would hate to get stuck with a bunch of that as leftovers.

@DesertDreams88: This would be my ideal- serve one drink and use the straws. Whole lemons could go on the bottom for even more decoration.

First, I totally forgot why iced tea and kids don’t mix- caffeine!! I do not give my kid iced tea. The only reason iced tea was even a drink consideration was I have a completely unopened package of Lipton mix that I bought as the non-alcohol beverage awhile ago for something I was doing. All my guests drank alcohol or opted for water.

@irene: totally here you that the cooler drinks would keep things super simple for me and reduce spills. I’m covering the picnic tables in craft paper and a spill would ruin the covering. I will say I envisioned being a little Starbucks Barista and labeling all the kids cups beforehand to mitigate mix ups and needing a new cup & new straw.

@bhbee: I ended up deciding not to give out favors besides the diy plastic egg maracas. Would silly straws (I have enough for 2-3 per child) be a lame favor by itself?

I think @irene: has a good point about the straws will end up all over - can you make them the party favor? They look so cool but once all those cups get mixed up they’ll end up thrown away at best.
I’d go with water in the dispenser. Kids LOVE a dispenser and just filling it up themselves will be a huge treat. We had a bake/lemonade stand with a couple 7yo girls a couple weeks ago and they were fighting over who got to dispense the lemonades they were selling 😜

As a parent I am not sure about iced tea as it has caffeine in it.

If it were me I'd just put small water bottles in a cooler, and maybe some prepackaged shelf-safe milk too (in the cooler). If I were to offer lemonade or juice they would also be juice box in the cooler.

Assuming this is for a birthday party I'd say spend your energy on the birthday cake presentation, color-coordinated balloons and other decorations. I just can imagine all those fancy straws get left out everywhere in the park. Personally I won't offer a bunch of fancy twirly straws to a bunch of kids it is invitation to spilled drinks (straws are quite long and will be more likely to tip the cups), chaos, crying and tantrums because some of them will bound to drop their straws on the ground and they can't use it anymore. Then all these kids would put down their cup at some point and no one knows whose cups belong to who. Ends up everyone wants a new straw + new cup, but you don't have enough straws. And they cry. I don't know, I guess I am weird... :silly:

I think water in the dispenser to use with thensilly straws. The kids will like the novelty of the straws and hopefully drink more water if they are running around. I would definitely NOT want iced tea because my kids would beg for it and it usually has some caffeine in addition to sugar (although- I really like iced tea). Most parties I’ve gone to have the healthier juice boxes or pouches, like honest ade or whatever- basically it’s already pre watered down. My kids do expect that at parties but know they can only have one each. It would be harder to keep them from refilling from a dispenser.

So I would say water in the dispenser with the silly straws, and if you want, lower sugar juice pouches. You could have seltzer’s our for the grown ups if you want another offer that the kids probably don’t want.

I’d put water in a big dispenser and anyone who wants it can get it in a cup. From my own parties and ones I have attended, we have water available (not bottles) and we put out a few juice boxes. Pretty much no one drinks the juice boxes and no one would care if something sugary wasn’t available. I bring my kids’ water bottles everywhere with me and so do a lot of parents and I would prefer them to drink water if they’re at a party with other treats like cake and stuff anyway. Also, people often bring their own water bottles too. I think this is in a bid to be more environmentally conscious and also because kids usually drink out of their familiar containers reliably. Any future parties we have I’ll maybe have a large container of something sweet if at all and just a jug of water/ tap water available. We don’t buy bottles because I don’t like to so I don’t know if people would want those or not. But if there is no sugary drink available no one would care or ask about it. In my opinion. And it seems wasteful because kids often drink only part of a juice box and then leave it or lose it or they’re too busy having fun.

Just my thoughts.

Venue: outdoor park pavilion

What I have so far: silly straws, 3 gallon plastic drink dispenser, cooler

Drink options:
Water in dispenser
Water bottles
Lemonade in dispenser
Lemonade in boxes/ pouches
Iced Tea in dispenser

I’m struggling with the best set up because a) anything besides water is a serious treat for LO and I just don’t know if how other parents feel the same about sugary drinks and b) the silly straws will look best in clear plastic cups with lids.

Total #firstworldproblem over here, but help me out.

The cups I would buy are 12 oz and ideally I would pre-fill them with ice and make ice available for additional refills. For the adults I would just need to buy striped paper straws.

Should I put lemonade or iced tea in the dispenser and put small water bottles in the cooler? Do kids drink iced tea?

Should I put water in the drink dispenser and put lemonade boxes/ pouches in the cooler? I haven’t tested if the silly straws will work well with the boxes/ pouches.
