We've taken K on two weekend trips now. Drive time between 6-8 hours each way (so 4xs). The trip used to take us about 5-5.5hrs. pre-baby. The lower end is when she sleeps most of the way. The higher end, when she's awake and you can just tell she doesn't want to be in the car seat anymore. We stop, take her out, let her have some air and cuddle time. We usually stop at least once every 2-3 hours to feed and change anyways.
1st trip she was 6 weeks. 2nd trip 9 weeks. hth!

DD is 14 weeks now and she's been on multiple (at least 6) 6 hour road trips, starting at 6-7 weeks. She has been a champ! We stretched/fed/changed 1 time each trip, and slept the rest of the time.

@.twist.: I mean def confirm with your pediatrician and what their reco is. But I think it will be totally fine stopping 1-2x. Hopefully your LO sleeps most of the way like M did!

@regberadaisy: It sounded like crazy talk to me. She apparently heard it from a Post Partum nurse that lives a couple houses down from her. haha I just don't know how much of it I can believe! My mom used to take my brother and I on 9 hour trips when were were infants and we're both healthy today!

Er...no...I heard every 2 hours but honestly LO slept most of the way so we let her be. Around 8 weeks we drove my mom home to NYC which is technically 8hrs but we do it in about 6.5 hrs. We did it at night so she slept most of the way. We stopped once when she woke up to nurse. I just put a overnight diaper on her and didn't even have to change!

My husband says that it's not great for a newborn to stay asleep in the car seat for really long stretches because they can't hold their heads up, and so airways are compressed. I don't think you need to take them out every 20 minutes though...we've done 3 hour trips and taken her out to feed her once.

I don't have any studies/research to refer you to, but that's what I've heard!

I wasn't sure where to put this?

I am going to ask my doctor, but I don't see her for another 2 weeks.

I have been trying to plan a trip to BC for our annual holiday after LO gets here. I'm hoping around 6ish weeks I will feel good enough to take about a 8 hour drive. I realize it will probably take longer because of stops for feeding and changes and whatever else.

However, I just heard from my MIL that she heard from someone else that travelling with newborns is a lot different "now a days" and you have to stop every 20 minutes or so and take them out of the car seat so they can stretch out?"

Has anyone else heard this? I have never heard this before and just wanted to know if our 8-ish hour drive is going to turn into a 24 hour thing....
