@yoursilverlining: that's really cute!

@Applesandbananas: ours did free play and we struggled too. Breakfast wasn't until later so we just started bringing her a cup of Greek yogurt for her to sit and eat. It helped a lot with the transition.

@Applesandbananas: some of the kids in lo's class do a "flying push" or "upside down wave",; usually it's the same teachers which helps but all the floaters seem to know what the usual routine options are. Flying push is the teacher holds the LO and zooms them up to the parent for a push out the door. Upside down wave is teacher holds LO and swings them upside down and they wave to their parent. My LO never wants to do either of those, but I know for some of her friends, those methods help parents leave without tears!

We always drop her off with breakfast from home. Later on they do a morning snack when all the kids are there. She sits right down and starts eating.

Free play, but if we get her there before 8 she can eat some breakfast. We feed her at home but we now habitually bring a banana for her to eat as soon as she arrives. Turns out it's a great distraction--we just have to keep bananas well stocked!

@yoursilverlining: that's a really good idea!! We've been trying the shove but he's not into it. There's no consistency as to which teacher is there in the morning, so some days are much worse than others :(

It's breakfast and free play at drop off. We developed a routine, and as long as we stick to it, LO is happy at drop off.

Most of the kids in her room like to give their parent a "big push" out the door. One of the teachers will help, and ask the LO if they want to give their parents a push out the door. Parents then get a little shove on the butt, and do exaggerated flailings out into the hallway :silly:

Our routine is I set her up with some breakfast (she eats breakfast at home, so it's just some milk and cereal at school usually), then we do 3 hugs and 3 kisses - and count them.

Then a push out the door, followed by 1 "monkey hug" (hug where she kind of jumps into my arms and wraps her legs around mine), and 1 kiss. Then waves and blow kisses and I'm gone.
I think establishing your own routine that is meaningful is essential to a good drop off.

All of the kids are in the big main room for free play as the kids get dropped off. Dd loves it because she gets to play with the "big girls" who treat her like a little baby doll. She doesn't get to see them any other time of the day really, so she loves drop off

@MamaCate: I was thinking of bringing it up, I was hoping to get some ideas from how others' daycares handle drop off :)

@Applesandbananas: Ours is similar in that there is often free play when we get there. But the teachers are quick to identify if LO is having a hard time and find a way to invite her to help. In the 1 y.o. room I always dropped off at snack and it was the easiest drop off we have had! Maybe you could share what you observed when he arrived during the meal and ask them to help find something for him to get involved in--a good drop off is better for everyone involved!

It os free play time as well. But her teachers are really good about distracting her with something so she doesn't freak out. For example, the one teacher always asks her to go feed the fishies with her. I get dropped like a bad habit. Lol

Does your daycare have a structured activity for LO to jump right into at drop-off?

Ours has free play during that time and LO has been struggling with drop-off. We came in one day right as breakfast was being served and that was the best drop-off we've had in a long time because he had something to jump right into!

How is drop-off at daycare for your LO?
