The first time we went to visit with M, I went into the room where the crib is and shook that crib with all my might. I tried SO hard to get the thing to drop - and it wouldn't. But it was much more recent that what you are talking about. After many worried tears on my part, my husband came up using with those plastic zip ties to hold the sides in place. I figured if he can't get the sides to drop or move putting all his weight on them, neither will a baby. </p> <p>I think it's all about how safe it feels to you--if it's rickety, has weird toxic paint or if you can't secure the sides to your comfort, maybe just bring along a pack n' play as a backup. I would never let my LO sleep in the crib my ILs have. It was my FIL's as a baby... he's almost 70. FWIW, LO sleeps in the drop-side crib I slept in as a baby. They were mad, but I don't feel comfortable with drop sides (even after the conversion kit, due to the mattress gap) so that was that. I bought a pack n play to replace it.
