All of mine have gone down to 1 nap relatively early, and DS (now 14.5m) is having the longest transition. I think because the other 2 were at daycare/school for some part of the morning and could just power through until the afternoon. But he is now doing one nap from 11a-1p (ish), which does mean he's extra tired by bedtime, but what can ya do!? With 3 kids and a working DH, we don't have much flexibility to get him down much earlier.

And yes, I would think the screaming/crying is a phase of the separation anxiety and/or just plain tantrums when I don't get what I want variety. I'd probably just pick a time when you think he *should* be napping (whether you want to try something mid-day or push for a true afternoon nap), and just do what you're comfortable with during the hour he should be napping (so either let him cry, or do some sort of checks).

I've also found that DS is definitely one of those kids who, if he falls asleep in the car for 15-20min to/from something in the mid-late morning, will NOT take an afternoon nap. Which is totally cramping our style these days (and making for some LONG afternoons where I get nothing done!). And is also the reason I try to plan for an 11-1p nap right now. It's not exactly my preference but I need that solid block of time!

If he's showing tired signs, he's up too long. I would try and put him down a half hour earlier than what you're currently doing. My son was on two naps for a long time, he was at least 20 months before he consolidated down to one long nap in the afternoon.

@gingerbebe: He just turned 15 months so I thought maybe this is a bit early for that. But ugh I hope we don't go through this again in a month or two! I really have no idea what's going on. Today I tried just one nap after lunch, when he was clearly very tired, and he screamed his head off and then passed out for 30 minutes and that was it.

There's a TERRIBLE regression around 16-18 months. Its screaming at all naps/bedtime, taking forever to fall asleep, crap naps, and horrible separation anxiety. For like 6 weeks my now-21 month old was just MOMMY MOMMY MOMMY and screaming at drop off every day - it was awful. It also coincides with when their canines come in, so they're in pain too. It sucks - probably my least favorite phase after the newborn period.

BUT IT ENDS. I promise.

@Ms.Mermaid: Haha! I still appreciate the advice! When did yours drop the second nap? I had read to slowly make the morning nap later and later until it's around noon, but it literally seems to make no difference when I put him down.

I would consolidate to one nap and pick a consistent time and leave him in the room to scream for an hour. But I actually just rocked my 3y4m old to sleep so I’m really not a source of wisdom on naps.

LO is 15 months, sleep trained, decent napper. He's been on two naps, but the past week suddenly started screaming bloody murder when he's put in the crib. I've tried changing the time of his nap, pushing it later, doing just one nap, etc. etc. and nothing is working. He is clearly exhausted, falls asleep the second he is in the car and falling asleep drinking before bed :( I don't know why he's fighting it so hard. He's going down without fuss for bedtime, but only sleeping around 10/10.5 hours at night whereas before he was 11-12.

Did anyone else's 15ish month old go through something similar? Today he just wailed in the crib for an hour without putting his head down for a second, it was terrible. I don't even know what time to put him down anymore because he's showing clear tired signs after only a couple hours awake in the morning... but he also seems find staying awake for several hours once he gets over that tired hump. No idea what to do, appreciate any advice from veteran moms!!!
