@hilsy85: Yeah trying to fit in just one meal of solids today was weird (First time!). I don't time his nursing any more but I don't think 8 minutes sounds short, I know they are super efficient at this stage. In the middle of the night my LO drains one side in about that and a little from the other and is back asleep, I'm back in bed usually in 15 minutes or less.

@scg00387: hm ok...maybe I'll try to spread it out a bit then...it's just so hard between naps and solids to figure out the best time to nurse!

@runsyellowlites: If he had his way, I think a lot of them would literally last two minutes. I basically force him to latch on again and again and do breast compressions while he nurses to get as much in there as I can lol.

@regberadaisy: ugh phases! These babies and their phases! :P

@hilsy85: I think 8 minutes is plenty long for a full feeding at this age! I was thinking like how P would get where's she'd latch for literally like 1-2 minutes and then be back on her way! lol

@runsyellowlites: thanks! I do think he is a fast nurser, especially because I have a fast/strong letdown...It doesn't seem unreasonable that he could get at least 2.5-3oz in like 8 minutes of nursing total...I was doing weighed feedings with him at home but that was driving me insane.

I wouldn't say he's been waking more--maybe twice at night sometimes (I nurse one of those times) but he puts himself back to sleep, which I wouldn't guess he would do if he's hungry?

@regberadaisy: I didn't think I was giving him THAT many solids? But maybe...do you think I should decrease the solids then? Or is it normal at this point for solids intake to ramp up? And TELL ME ABOUT IT! How about the fact that your DD is ONE?! Crazy pants! :)

@hilsy85: It was just kind of how it worked out - he almost always wakes up at or around 6:30 and he eats better if I wait until he's fully awake (even though he usually wakes up happy) so 7 just evolved as a start time.

His naps are all over the place lately - he is trying to transition to 2 instead of 3 but the last few days have been napping 9-10:30 and 1-3.

@hilsy85: I would try & nurse more during the day then. Remember he's a much more efficient nurser now so just b/c it's a short session doesn't mean it's a "small" feeding. He should still get around 25oz of breastmilk a day so with 6 nursing sessions that's just around 4oz a session (sometimes less sometimes more).. I'd bet he could get that pretty quick (probably even more during his "real" sessions) & then if you have any quick "I need a drink" sits would even add to this.

I wouldn't add any bottle unless he seemed to wake more, like 2 or 3 times more (which he could naturally do since it's normal to reverse cycle through these phases) and then it'd be more adding it to drink with his solids... otherwise I would just offer the breast often.

@scg00387: ha no worries! I am always worried about his weight gain (although I KNOW he's gaining, thanks to our home scale, so maybe I need to worry less)...I'll try to space things out a bit I guess. I also HATE wasting milk--drives me crazy.

How did you come up with those times? When does he nap?

@hilsy85: yes, and I don't want to sound like a broken record :) but it definitely made a difference for us. I know you're worried about weight gain, which we haven't been/had to but I would at least try it. I thought for sure I'd have to do it incrementally and slowly and was ready to nurse the instant he fussed and... he didn't! He was just ready to go longer. I'm not sure when (if..??!) he drops the night nursing session if we'll add in another day one or just when he's eating more solids.

I personally wouldn't offer a bottle, I think you'd just end up wasting the milk.

@runsyellowlites: Well we recently sleep trained (which I know you're not a fan of...) so I don't nurse him more than once a night. But even during that one night time session, he's not nursing voraciously like I would think he would be.

I guess we'll just muddle our way through and I"ll ask the pedi at our next appt.

@hilsy85: Breastfed babies can get their calories anytime within the 24 hours period. We've had times where P would reverse cycle a couple days or we'd nurse more to sleep & immediately upon waking (like when she was still have asleep) and we've always made it through without giving a bottle. I always tried to avoid it though b/c I didn't want to risk her becoming lazy at the breast or early weaning.

@runsyellowlites: ok so if he were hungry, he would nurse right?! That's what I try to keep telling myself...that he must just not be that hungry and I don't need to do a bottle.

@mrskc: he's eating more solids (3x a day) but the amounts aren't that huge...and he always nurses first.

Sounds like a normal phase. Sometime P nurses full sessions, sometimes she snacks through the day... We've never supplemented with bottles, when she'd finally get hungry she'd nurse.

Maybe space them out more so he's hungrier and more likely to nurse longer. Otherwise, I'm not sure. Is he eating a lot more solids now? Maybe cut back some solids if you want him to nurse longer?

LO is 7 months old and over the last week or so, he seems like he's become very un-interested in nursing...he'll latch on and nurse for a few minutes, but then pull off...I'll try to get him back on, and sometimes he'll nurse again for a minute or so, but then that's it. He's smiling and chatting with me after he pulls off, so it doesn't seem like he's still hungry...does this sound like he's trying to drop nursing sessions? It seems early, at 7 months? Or is this a nursing strike?

Either way, should I be offering bottles after I nurse to try to get more into him? I'm so unsure, only because he acts happy and satisfied, so I don't want to force feed him, or waste breastmilk if he won't take the bottle.
