@Truth Bombs: I don't expect them to lengthen a nap, but I do expect them to respect our wishes in regards to how he falls asleep. They are reluctant to use the white noise machine and so they turn it on very, very low, and on the wrong setting. They also hold him and/or rub his back until he falls asleep. We asked them to not do that.... we prefer drowsy-but-awake, and him putting himself to sleep in his crib, which happened about 75% of the time before they cared for him. I believe both of those things are contributing to his naps shortening.

They also recently have started keeping him up longer than we've asked, multiple times, because they say he is not tired.

@DesertDreams88: unless they are waking him up, I'm not sure how much they can do to lengthen a nap. they can control when they put him down for a nap but can't really control how long he stays asleep.

Dang.... seems like we are going in the opposite direction, since his daytime naps are getting progressively shorter and his afternoon nap is getting pretty long. Daytime naps are with grandparents, afternoon nap is with us. Ugh.... guess we have to have a talk. We always have to have talks....

Eventually the 3rd nap had to get progressively shorter as wake times extended and he naturally wouldn't sleep more than 45 minutes no matter what beginning around 4 months. You could set a clock to it. We dropped it around 5 or 6 months when he just refused to go down for it at all. At that point we did long baths to keep him happy and bumped up bedtime like 15 minutes and it was fine. The first two naps were 90 minutes to 2 hours and they didn't really get longer after the transition except they were really solidly 2 hours each until 10 months. We did a 2.5, 2.5, 3 schedule for a long time.

@JoyfulKiwi: yep! DD wakes up in the morning, then two hours later takes her first nap, three hours after she wakes up she takes her second, and four hours after she wakes up from her second she goes to bed.

I can't remember with our older son. But I've been trying to figure this out for C now as well. I feel like she needs a 3rd because her second nap ends around 1:30 and she can't go like 5.5 hours until bedtime. But it ends up being from 4:30/5:00 to 5:30 and then she isn't ready for bed until 8ish which is too late. Blech. Let me know how 2 naps goes and maybe we'll try it too!
@Mrs. Pickle: @Foodnerd81: is 2-3-4 the length of wake time between naps?

We decided to drop a nap when LO wasn't going to sleep very well last night. Then we went to two naps and it helped. She was taking two 90-120 minute naps.

She was taking decent first and second naps which would push the third nap too late and too close to "bedtime" (which is still flexible anyway). We switched to 2-3-4, roughly.

Also, I have a toddler, so it's just a lot easier for me to plan outings based on two naps, not three.

We dropped the 3rd nap because it was getting too late in the day and messing with bedtime. Her naps lengthened a week or two after she started taking 2 naps. We do a 2-3-4 schedule.

Around 8m, we dropped the third nap because he would started skipping it pretty regularly. First nap was usually pretty long, but the second and third naps were pretty short - 45m-ish. After we officially dropped the third nap, the two naps were both around 90m long.

We forced 3-2 because his naps were getting really bad and he often wouldn't sleep for the third nap. They stayed short for about a week after we switched and then started to lengthen again.

What came first..... longer naps so you went from 3 to 2 naps, OR you went from 3-2, and then the naps lengthened? OR, I guess, you went from 3 to 2 naps and the naps still stayed short :-/

During month 5, LO took a 45min, 90min, and 45 min naps, OR two 90-120 min naps (like 1-2x a week.)

Now at the end of month 6, he is taking three 45 min naps or 45, 45, 90 (90 with us).

LO has also started grandparent care during the day instead of being with us, and I'm not sure that we're all on the same sleep page.
