@deerylou: today I ordered the little tikes tap a tune drum on amazon. He loves slapping/banging at 7 months. I liked it because it looks simple. It's also inexpensive so no great loss if he doesn't love it.

I love the Melissa and Doug set @hilsy85: mentioned. I love simple wooden toys, and they fit the bill.

We have the Melissa and Doug band in a box. Lo started playing with it around 7 months. I like that the toys are wooden not plastic.

We are getting the plan toys xylophone for her for Xmas, and a couple wooden rattles. I figure she turns everything into a drum anyway!

Maybe I'll just go for it, then! I could always just introduce more of the toys, as she grows. Seems like this set has longevity, which is great. I appreciate all the feedback, guys. :)

My daughter has played with that set since she wAs 6 mo old and it is one of her favorites. She is walking now at 12 mo and I do take away the drum sticks because I don't want her to fall with them in her mouth - but she likes to use them if I'm sitting down with her. I think the set is around $20 at Target. We got ours at a yard sale for $5 (woo hoo)!

D has been playing with his set since about 5 months old, and he loves it. At first he just kind of gnawed on the drum sticks, then he started shaking the eggs. Now he really likes banging the drum sticks, sometimes on the drum but usually on whatever is nearby. He also likes making silly faces with the drum lid!

@deerylou: I think parts of it could be! My son had toy eggs that came with a farm toy he loved around 6 months old. This set has 2 shaker eggs in it that would probably be great. That and just using the drum would probably work out well. I would probably hold back the rattle with the bells though until she was older.

@deerylou: we have that set and love it. There is a little egg that makes a maracca sound that a younger baby could definitely enjoy before they grow into the rest of it.

We actually got this set as a shower gift. LO is almost four months, and she likes chewing on the drumsticks, haha. But with all of the different instruments and things, I think it will last her a long time.

Yeah, I've seen the flashier drums at Target and Toys R Us, and am hesitant.

We have this one - http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-K8845-Crawl-Along-Drum-Roll/dp/B000LSZVJG/ref=sr_1_15?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1386019566&sr=1-15&keywords=baby+drum - and my 10 mo DD is *obsessed* with it (started around 8 months).

We got it as a hand-me down from a friend with two kids. I really didn't want it, but she insisted that it was a must-have. I see what she meant! (BTW, you can mute the thing, which is its saving grace...)

@deerylou: oops just saw your DDs age. Yeah it may be a little too old for her. But I recommend it in the future. Thought she might be able to play when the other toys inside now... Not too sure though..

I've seen some fisher price light up drum sets for younger babies at target. But it's pretty flashy with lights and music (one reason I didn't buy it).

My son actually got that set for his first birthday as well and has played with it quite a bit since that time. I did have to take away the drum sticks though because he was hitting us in the face with those (and the cats who were not very nice about it!).

A friend just got this for us for DS's first birthday. He got it Saturday and loves it. I did have to take the drumsticks away from him because he was crawling around with it in his mouth. I could just see him falling and it going down his throat. He has just been drumming with his hands for now. He loves shaking all the other instruments too. We haven't had any issues yet other than the drumsticks. I figure I will give those back to him when he is older!

We'd like to get DD a drum or a set of musical instruments as her main gift for Christmas. She will be 5.5 months at the end of the month, and has shown interest in grabbing and shaking tangible items and toys. She regularly taps on my travel mug, and slaps tupperware bowls when I present them to her.

We were looking at this set, because of the great reviews: http://www.amazon.com/B-Parum-Pum-Drum-Lime/dp/B003WE34HC/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1386018810&sr=8-12&keywords=drums+baby

However, it seems to have small parts, and isn't recommended for babies under 18 months. My friend's daughter received it as a first birthday gift, and is just now starting to play with it at 16 months. I think it might be a little advanced for DD, for now. We tend to gravitate towards simple, less "flashy" toys (aka: things I won't want to chuck out the window, immediately) but we're definitely open to suggestions!

Any recommendations for 6+ months?
