@Foodnerd81: Oitments (like Aquaphor) will moisturize better than lotions, so you'll get more bang for your buck if you just use Aquaphor more often, as opposed to using lotion. Xander has eczema and Aquaphor works wonders for him, but every so often we do have to break out the 1% hydrocortisone ointment instead.

Also - what body wash/shampoo are you using? Our pediatrician told us that J&J were actually the harshest to use and suggested we use the Aquaphor one.

We use emolient like aquaphor in the wash water for patients with dry sensitive skin. Just use that instead of any soap/wash.

LO's skin was super dry and patchy and for the longest time, I didn't want to use Aquaphor (I don't know why!). Finally I broke down and got some Baby Aquaphor and Oh My Goodness it's made a world of difference. Yes, she is a little greasy right when you put it on, but I feel like her (thirsty) skin just absorbs all of it and she has wonderfully soft and un-dry and un-patchy skin now. :-)

I've also heard coconut oil is good!

I like the Burt's Bees baby lotion.

But sometimes when she's really dry, like, chapped cheeks, I put Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream on her.... or cold cream. Six months might be a bit young for that though.

I don't find that the humidifier cools down the room at all. And it definitely helps with the dryness in the room. We use Aveeno Eczema lotion on D every night after bath on his rough patches, and then I use Burts Bees baby lotion on top of that all over.

We only bathe LO every other day in the winter. I think even the warm water can be drying. However, we still lotion him up every night and if there are dry patches, we really throw on the aquaphor. It usually clears up pretty quickly. We also run a cool mist humidifier every night and during naps. I don't think the cool mist cools down the room.

@redsmarties: @Pepper: Does the cool mist humidifier make the room feel colder? I always feel so cold when I go in there to nurse in the middle of the night, even though she is plenty warm in her PJs and sleep sack. I sit near the window which is part of the problem but I can't imagine it being cold and damp feeling.

@.twist.: I don't lotion as much as I should. I sort of never got in the habit because I read about all these lotions being bad and containing bad ingredients and it was too much for me to deal with researching in the newborn haze so I just avoided it! Maybe I'll try doing the mustela every night as well as the aquaphor on the patches.

@Pepper: I use Baby Aquaphor on her face-- it feels slightly less greasy, but it's still definitely... slick. I've thought about using lanolin, since I know that's OK for her to swallow and get on her face.

K has the same thing on her legs, and a patch on her shoulder. I get this too, every winter without fail. We use soap in the bath only about 2x a week, use Aveeno eczema care on her legs several times a day, and have a cool mist humidifer on in her room. It helps, but doesn't really go away completely.

@Foodnerd81: C has super dry skin. We do bath time every night as part of his routine (though we only use soap on his body every other day). I really think the Aquaphor helps, especially after bath time when the pores are more open. It definitely makes him greasy, but it's the only thing that helps his dry patches.

His face is SO dry, and that's where I struggle, because I think the aquaphor is too greasy for his face!

I think a cool mist humidifier wouldn't hurt, especially if you think the air in your house is really dry.

DD has the same dry, scaly patches on her cheeks. Try this - http://www.amazon.com/MD-Moms-Rescue-Extreme-Cream/dp/B00B7QF5R4/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1390922324&sr=8-10&keywords=md+moms. It works wonderfully - you can see the difference overnight.

Do you lotion at all? We live in a super dry climate and I do bath time every night and a lotion ever night as part of our bed time routine. L's skin is super soft (and I have insanely dry skin, so it's not genetics!). His cheeks and nose and elbows get dry sometimes, but it just make sure to lotion them too!

C's skin is so dry these days. Her legs are rough and bumpy in several spots, as well as her shoulders and a spot on her lower back where I think the diaper rubs, not to mention her face is dry and she's got a rough patch of drool rash. She's a mess.

Any recommendations? This was starting before her 4 month appt and the ped recommended putting Aquaphor on the rough spots 2x a day. I definitely don't remember twice a day but probably at least once a day and it doesn't seem to help much, plus I don't like how greasy she feels. We have Johnson's and Mustela lotions but neither are heavy enough.

I only give her a bath once or twice a week, and they are always shorter than 10 minutes. Would adding some kind of oil to the water help? Humidifier? Heavy cream lotion?

It doesn't seem to bother her, but it just seems like it can't be comfortable. The heat will be on for several more months here in New England, so it's not going to get better any time soon on its own.

Oh and anything beside Aquaphor for the drool rash? I wipe the drool as often as a can, but she's 6 months, probably teething, and you know how that goes!
