@KT326: Tell me about it! I also thought it was overkill. It will be our first year of baseball though (last year was T-ball), machine pitched.

@irene: that’s pretty intense for t-ball! I understand it for the older kids that would actually get to play in the state championships but t-ball doesn’t (at least in my state! I mean, they don’t even have a pitcher!). We have uniforms too but only wear them for games. They don’t have drafts in our little league until you hit a certain level. Until then it’s all about learning the skills you need to advance.

Thank you everyone for your comments! I really appreciate it. I am so sorry I always open a thread and life gets busy and I don't check back in 3 days later. I read everything and I am truly thankful!

@Mrs. Champagne: Thank you so much for the reassurance, and the crock pot, haha! Glad that I am not the only one, just wasn't sure if it was the norm.

@SweetiePie: Thanks for all the thoughtful suggestions and true about the crackers. And hinting that I am not in the bad mom category for offering snacks for dinner 2 times a week :silly: I said eek because of my own situation. If I gave DS crackers, he would only eat crackers and nothing else. He also doesn't like healthier dips like hummus so it will be 100% snack for dinner. I haven't thought about seeking out healthier choices and thank you for the reminder! I am not sure if I can count on him changing before coming out to meet me but I think we can change at school (extremely tight timewise) or in the car. @Mommy Finger: please see above on crackers, I hope I didn't offend you.

@travellingbee: I honestly don't know how to plug in a crock pot in the car...! How do you drive with a pot of stew?!

@Pollywog: Thanks! The thing is I don't think we have time to eat when we get back! His bedtime is 7:30 and the practice says it ends at 7 (I don't know if it really ends at 7, we will find out). We will have to jump into the shower when we get back and go right to sleep. Not to mention it takes DS 1.5 hours to eat a normal meal (I know, don't get me started) so if we were to eat after he gets home, it will be 9:30 before he can go to bed...

@looch: my reasoning of stopping at home is because I honestly don't even know where the bathroom is in his school main entrance (where I am picking him up). If it requires a walk then I might as well go home :silly: Even if we find one it'd probably be the little boys' bathroom and I can't go in, and I can't trust him with giving him his uniform and change it in the bathroom without dropping it in the toilet, wipe the whole bathroom floor clean, and under 5 minutes, haha. Then I also don't know where the bathroom is at the field (and not knowing if it is gross or not). I guess I will figure out. Maybe i'll make him use the bathroom at school, and change in the car, or just put the baseball uniform shirt on top of his school uniform and make him the dork

@gingerbebe: Thank you so much for the thoughfulness on the food choice I should be bringing, that is very helpful!!

@misolee: Thanks for the reassurance!

@KT326: I also don't know what are they going to do for 2 hours, 2 times during the week and every saturday for games?! I have a feeling it will end earlier than 7 but who knows. These people are serious, they are 6 years old and they have to go to a performance draft before they assign the teams/coaches and schedules, and yes they have uniforms. I was told they win national or state championship consistently. And they are 5 minutes from our house. So it is really the only option for us geographically speaking.

Again, I really really appreciate all the suggestions and reassurance, this really really helps!!!

I just want to pop in and say that is a really long practice for T-ball! Our league limits games to 45 minutes and coaches usually do one 45-60 minute practice a week. They are 4-6 year olds being introduced to the game, their attention span isn’t that long!

We also didn’t go to half the practices because I had a newborn at home. I don’t think it hurt him at all as far as learning the game. We are moving up to the next level this year and he’s really excited.

This year we will probably just do super easy meals like something from the freezer or sandwiches on days we have practice.

Also, we don’t have to wear uniforms for practice, just comfortable clothes. My son just wore whatever he had on for preschool. For t-ball they don’t even really need cleats, but most want them because all the older kids have them.

Our swim schedule is similar but only once a week. Not terribly healthy but last week she ate pizza rolls in the car. We've done PBJs, chicken nuggets, and quesadillas. She usually eats after we come back home so whatever she eats is like a snack for her.

Again, not terribly healthy but once a week is okay :D

I would change your child into his uniform at school when you pick him up, make him wash his hands, and then eat a cold dinner that's more like a lunch with you either in the car or on a bench at his school.

I think bland, protein filled foods are your best bet in that they will fuel him, but not cause too much stomach upset if he has to run or something. I wouldn't care about crackers or salt because they need the electrolytes. I would stick to something like:

PBJ on whole grain bread, string cheese, and a fruit/veg pouch.

Pita pocket with hummus and turkey, trail mix with some dried fruit.

Crackers, salami or pepperoni, cheese slices, olives, and grapes.

Quesadillas with chicken or beans, or pizza quesadillas with pepperoni, sauce, and cheese. They can be eaten at room temp just fine. Cucumber slices and banana.

And I would have some small snack to eat on the way home. I personally give my kids a small sweet snack after they have had a big run around and they really like apple cinnamon rice cakes (which doesn't make too much of a mess in the car).

I agree, I wouldn't stop home. I think you work from home, right? Why not just bring what he needs with you, and he eats at the field? I would leverage the facilities at the school to wash up and change, and then I'd have something to eat at the field.

Then when at home after practice, I'd do shower and into pajamas, and then I would offer something else to eat, maybe something warm.

That's a really long practice for that age. Are you sure it'll go the whole time? As far as what I'd do, it'd depend on how strong his stomach is and how intense practice is. I know I could practice on carbs, but not dairy. If it were me, I'd change in the car and pack a veggie muffin, fruit, and some lean meat or peanut butter. Then I'd have dinner ready in the crock pot when I get back.

I know some people do an instant pot and plug in in the car. To me I’d rather just do cold meals for those days. Pasta salad with chopped ham or tuna and veggies mixed in. Sandwiches. Cold cuts and cheese....

I think you’re on the right path to plan them to be more snacky/lunchy. A sandwich, a veggie, a fruit. Done. I have friends who’s girls are in tennis lessons after school a couple days a week and they just get PB sandwiches those nights.
It’s not going to kill anyone to do a sandwich a couple nights a week. DH and DS both had them last night and there wasn’t any baseball practice involved :-) I just didn’t feel like doing more and I had plans at 6pm.
ETA: you said yikes about crackers, but as long as you’re not doing straight up ritz I don’t see what the big deal is. We get these really great seed crackers made by Crunch Master that my 3yo loves. At least once a week he gets a homemade “lunchable”. Seed crackers, cheese, a protein (turkey pepperoni or turkey breast), cucumbers or carrots, a fruit. Maybe some hummus or chick peas. He loves it, it’s fun, it’s easy for me, and it’s relatively healthy. I put it in our bentgo box.

As for the time between school ending and practice beginning, I would either send his baseball uniform or practice clothes to school those days and have him change before he meets you in the car or bring them with you. Keep cleats in the car so he can just change when you get to the field.
I wouldn’t bother stopping home - I think that will make you feel really rushed and just invites the possibility of being late (ie stopping at home where there are distractions. And sometimes when my son gets home he really doesn’t want to leave again. He’s like me, a homebody. Lol. So it would be a fight to get him to hurry and change and get back in the car like 20 mins later).

I'd say a snack type dinner is your best bet and then something else when he gets home as he will be hungry. They have Greek yogurt pouches out now that might be a good filling snack.

A crock pot in the car sounds like a terrible idea to me.

DS just turned 6. Last year we were at T-ball which he enjoyed, so I signed him up for baseball in spring. The local league we joined are pretty serious, and I know full well it will be pretty hectic (1 Saturday game + 2 weekdays practice). I just thought we'd give it a try and see where this goes. Schedule came out today. Weekday practices usually starts around 5pm or 5:30pm, and lasts all the way to 7pm / 7:30pm.

In a regular day, I would pick him up at school around 4:30pm (I can't pick him up earlier than that as these are afterschool "enrichment" classes we signed up and paid for). Our dinner starts at 5:15-ish, bath time is 6:30, and bedtime is 7:30-8. With baseball practice start at 5pm, we really only have time to maybe stop by at home, change, use the bathroom, and head straight to the field. I don't even know where to fit dinner in!

I am thinking I'll just pack a picnic style "lunch pack", with extremely simple things that I am sure he will eat, like a ham and cheese sandwich and some celery or carrot sticks. Or some cheese, crackers (yikes), fruit, broccoli and what not. I could bring a puttanesca pasta with some chicken which can be eaten cold/ room temperature (but oh boy he can not eat that in the car or I'd die). He'd have to eat in the car or in the dugout before the practice  . I have a feeling he'd still be grazing while the practice starts. There I am not so sure how I feel about those dirty hands keep coming back for more bites....!

When we were at T-ball in the Fall last year (which was a lot more relaxed), some moms were chatting about a mom who has perfected the art of these kinds of afterschool team sports. She would bring a crock pot (!?) and plug it in the car and just go, and she would be able to feed her family while taking them to baseball.

I am sure some of you savvy moms have done this before, so I thought I'd reach out and hear from you all! How do kids eat with a practice time like that? Or what time do they eat? Should I even think about investing in an insulated food container so I can bring warm dinners, like a pasta or something (But then that would be a pain to heat up prior to picking him up at school)? Please share your wisdom
