@autumnleaves: Knowing that its not uncommon does help! I'm glad I posted here. No one in my family had ever heard of it, and although our daycare director and some of the other teachers were familiar, my daughter's current two teachers were not, and they were very concerned.

@shabang: One of my boys has had 4 febrile seizures and it is so scary. I think knowing that it is not that uncommon helps - the 2 pediatricians that we see both have kids who have had febrile seizures and then I talked with 2 ER doctors recently and 1 had a febrile seizure himself when he was a baby and the other has a child who had one. And also knowing that most children only have 1 or if they have more than 1 they may have a few febrile seizures and then they outgrow it. My son does not take an anti-seizure med. We saw a neurologist but since the seizures are definitely fever related, I decided not to put my son on one. We do start giving him motrin or tylenol when he has a fever over 100 and if it is a high fever we rotate every 3 hours with tylenol and motrin. I told daycare to call me if he has a fever over 100 or if he is fussy with no fever - their policy is to call if 101 but I don't want it to get to that point. Last summer high fevers with ear infections caused his 2 seizures and we ended up getting tubes and avoid ear infections all winter. The seizures he had recently were caused by a fever from a viral throat infection. He has hasn't had HFM yet and I am totally stressed that he is going to get a high fever and seizure with that.

This happened to my nephew about a year ago while he was at daycare (hasn’t happened since) and they use those thermometers with the sticker that attaches to the child and alerts you on your iPhone if the temp rises above a certain number. Those might be worth looking into for peace of mind. So sorry you experienced this.

@shabang my son had a febrile seizure when he was just over a year old. Scariest night of our lives, as it happened in the motn and we barely noticed the crib creaking repeatedly and an odd noise coming from DS's room. I will never forget my or my husband's terror, or the limp feeling of DS afterwards--plus those moments of heartache of not knowing if he would be okay.

Our ped said it was scarier for us than him, and he is JUST fine. It just happens when a fever comes on all of a sudden, or drops too quickly.
Even though he is JUST fine, it is still SO SCARY.

However, the good news is it's been almost 2 years, and he has not had one since. We are still very cautious with fevers, and layer Tylenol and Motrin as needed when DS is sick, and check on him every few hours in MOTN. We taper off the meds during the day, when it's not naptime--to monitor him closely.

I am pregnant with our second and will always be cautious when she is sick, and give the layer of Tylenol/Motrin when she's not feeling well.

The feeling doesn't really go away, but it does subside. I'm sorry you had to experience it, but just remember LO IS OKAY!

@shabang: For us, the “first sign of fever” is always “huh, B seems cranky. Ohhhh, he has a fever of 104.” So we give one, then wait about 90 minutes and if his fever isn’t below 101 we give the other and do that for the rest of that day, trying to time it for Advil right at bedtime (because it lasts longer). Then they usually sleep until both have worn off and we reassess to see if the fever is coming down.

@shabang: I cannot comment from a seizure standpoint but DD1 suffered through so many rough nights because of ear infection fevers. My ped recommended administering Motrin (ibuprofen) before bed, we usually did 1 hour to make sure the motrin was controlling it. Any sign that the motrin was not controlling it and we planned to layer tylenol. I consider controlling it to mean fever is going down, even minimally. I also kept an eye to make sure that hour 4-6 on just motrin the fever was not rapidly spiking. So - if I gave motrin and it "worked" but I noticed at hour 4.5 her fever was spiking again, I would layer tylenol - then start the 3 hour clock.

In terms of reducing meds when you think the fever is gone I always tried to do this mid day, so I could easily monitor without the overnight factor.

Some additional thoughts I followed:
*closely closely monitor from 6-7pm (my girls bedtime was 7 at this time)
*footless jammies, I always find its best to leave feet bare so the fever has somewhere to go
*nightlight on in the room to take motn temperature taking easier/less disruptive to bay

@erinbaderin: Thanks for weighing in. Do you layer Tylenol/Advil for 24 hours straight at the first sign of fever? How do you know when to start tapering off? I've always been very light on medicine usage with my kids, so this is very different to me.

@shabang: I’m so sorry you went through this! This happened to my son when he was just over a year old. I wasn’t home - my husband was with him, I was almost home from work - but I think the terror of it took years off my husband’s life, and I got home a few minutes after it happened and seeing him so limp and out of it was awful.

Both my son and my second baby have continued to always get really high fevers when they’re sick, but no more seizures - we’re cautious around fevers and layer Tylenol/Advil. As far as moving on for yourself, it helped me to remember that seizures in young children are really common.

@mrstilly: I know this is a super-old post, but my little one had a febrile seizure this weekend, and I'd never heard of or seen anything like that. It was terrifying, and I couldn't identify more with this statement: "I have to purposefully stop myself from thinking about what happened because my mind floods with images of him before we got into the ambulance and I'm paralyzed with fear and anxiety. "

If you're still on hellobee, do you have any tips as far as moving forward? We've alerted all daycare providers and are taking steps to always have fever meds and a thermometer on hand everywhere, but anything else that helped you? I hope your son has long outgrown this, and it never happened again!

We spent the weekend with a sad little guy with a high fever too. Not fun being on edge the whole time worrying over them. I understand being scared to leave him, I think it definitely warrants taking some time off to recover mentally.

I wasn't around yet (this is my husband's niece) but from what my SIL has told me, she had a very high fever, had a seizure, and had to be taken to the hospital. It only happened once to her, which was enough for one lifetime! I hope it never repeats for you, either!!

Omg :( I started crying while reading this. I can't imagine worrying and being so panicked. Personally, I would take a week off work and stay with him. That is so, so scary. I hope he recovers and the fevers go away.

So, so scary. Hoping for a speedy recovery, and hopefully your doc will be able to put you a little more at ease.
