All 3 of mine were EBF and weren’t very keen to cows milk. They’re still not big fans. The older two drink like half a cup a day for breakfast bc I make them. (They love cheese, yogurt, smoothies so it evens out).

My youngest had same reaction at twelve months. So I stopped for awhile. But recently started offering again at 16 months and I don’t know what changed but she guzzles it down. She’s not completely weaned at 17 months (nurses like once every other day) but I think at 12 months she was still nursing several times and milk wasn’t needed. Whereas now she’s not really nursing, she wants the milk? 🤷🏻‍♀️

@MsMini: I got to get on this smoothie thing! That would be way easier to make for all of us in the mornings for breakfast when we have to get out the door.

@JennyLayneAZ: good to know that one is sweet.

None of my 3 kids drink cows milk, they don’t like it. We just offer lots of cheese, yogurt and yogurt-based smoothies and they are doing great!

Another alternative you could try is Lactaid (lactose free milk). If it is the fact that cows milk is less sweet, he may like the lactaid. DD had a dairy sensitivity so she drank that for two years, and I tried it. Its sweet lol

It is so good & reassuring to hear so many other babies not liking it and not drinking it.

@peachykeen: our daycare only provides 2% milk. Anything else we have to provide which is kind of a pain.

I’m thinking I’ll offer again in the week before his start date but keep all this in mind and not stress if he refuaes it. He may even drink some there since he will be missing about 3 nursing sessions.

My son completely refused it at first. He warmed up to it a bit as we mixed it in gradually, but still doesn't love it on anywhere near the level he loved bm and formula. He does LOVE yogurt, and I don't really worry about how much milk he takes.

My 2nd never liked it. At 2.5 she rarely drinks more than like 2oz; she does nurse so that's a huge reason I was not worried but even without, she eats enough yogurt/smoothies type stuff that I don't really push it with her.

Just here to ditto what others said. My LO (18 mos) doesn’t really drink any cow’s milk. She has dairy in yogurt and cheese and the ped said there is no reason they need cows milk. We offer it at dinner and she takes an ounce or two sometimes but that’s it. Don’t stress!

I would try soy milk as a transition if you really want him on milk. It's naturally sweeter than cow's milk and is the best non-dairy alternative, nutritionally. We had DD2 on soy from 12m to about 20m due to a dairy sensitivity and she's transitioned well to cow's milk from the soy. I think many daycares/preschools offer soy as an option due to dairy allergies/sensitivities - you could ask.

DD has always refused cows milk and her pediatrician is completely fine with it. She eats yogurt and cheese and we make sure she has Vitamin D rich foods or supplement.

I personally think too much of an emphasis is put on cows milk consumption in the US.

Thanks everyone, this is reassuring! I may try again closer to daycare starting but I’ll just remember to put lots of dairy in his lunch. He loves cheese and yogurt. And he loves water, if he doesn’t take to milk I’ll make sure they give him plenty of water.

I guess I’m having a hard time because DS1 added in milk no problem while EBF. He drank so much of it until about 4.5 and now at 6 he doesn’t really drink it at all.

DS didn’t like it either, but he drank water. Per my pediatrician I gave him a vitamin d supplement and would just offer it at meals. He eventually started drinking it regularly.

Same! My kiddo is now 4. We EBF until 1 and sent pumped milk to daycare for about another month after his birthday to use up the freezer stash. I eventually mixed to whole milk and he drank it but then just stopped drinking it at daycare or home. He loves cheese and will eat yogurt but just doesn’t like milk plain. He is healthy and growing so I just let it go.

It has led to some funny moments when he moves up a room and they have him down as “no milk—allergy”. I asked them to switch it and they switched it to “no milk-parent preference” even though it is really a child preference!

We skipped it too. I did have to remind DD's teachers to give her water because if they only offered milk she would just go all day with no fluids.

My 3 year old has never liked cow's milk. She will sometimes drink almond or ripple but for the most part I just don't worry about it. She eats tons of cheese and is healthy and growing.
Cow's milk isn't really necessary if you just want to skip it

My kids never really liked cows milk. I kept offering but eventually I let it go and just made sure they got calcium/ vit D elsewhere. They still don't like it and they are 6 and 4. Their Dr. isn't the happiest about it but I am not going to worry about it. We do daily vitamins too since they were able to chew them up.

I’d let them figure it out or just let him have water and serve other dairy with meals. Kids can be fine without cow milk!

Neither of my older ones would drink cow milk while I was nursing. Apparently it’s less sweet? My oldest learned to like milk within about 6 months of Weaning, around 2 I guess. She just drank water at daycare at 1. My middle is 4 and still won’t drink milk! He eats cheese and yogurt. My baby (who is also almost one :crying: ) is allergic so I don’t even have to think about it!

@ALV91711: I think it’s common to not love it at first because the taste/texture are so different, so if it’s important to you keep trying. But I also wouldn’t worry it he never likes it - neither of my kids ever drank cow’s milk. They drank some almond milk but got plenty of diary through cheese and yogurt.

DS2 will be one on the 27th. He starts daycare the first week of September. He is EBF and has three meals a day.

I’ve started to introduce cow milk to him as this is what he will be drinking at daycare. I’ve been giving him a cup in the afternoon and trying to include something for a snack.

The first couple days he took a sip and then let it all fall out of his mouth while looking horrified. Now he won’t take a sip. I’ve tried dirrerent temperatures and different cups.

I haven’t pumped in months so there isn’t an option of sending pumped milk or mixing. Do I just keep trying? Not worry about it and let daycare figure it out? I will keep breastfeeding am and pm until he chooses to stop.
