I took him when he was around 18 months. Oh man, he hated it! But I was able to distract him with my iphone. I would bring a change of clothes in case he gets little hairs stuck in his shirt that might bother him.

DD didn't get her first haircut until her 2nd birthday; no kidding! I took her to the same woman who does my hair, and she was done in like 10 minutes. DD just sat on my lap and we watched YouTube videos until she was done.

Give him bubbles! For DD's first two haircuts she got bubbles as a distraction (I took her to a children's salon) and it worked great. Now she knows the drill and loves her hair cuts, distraction no longer needed.

I took my son around 14 months because the back was getting long even the top hadn't filled in yet. It was okay but I had to hold his head still, which was no easy feat. He had recently learned to shake his head "no" so that is all he wanted to do. Later that week I was getting my hair cut and my friend/hair dresser wanted to trim up around his ears better so I sat him in my lap and that went much better. Maybe try having him sit on your lap? Also, if they are good enough, have them use scissors instead of clippers so the sound doesn't startle your LO.

DS is 15 months and has crazy hair. He was starting to look a little mullet-ish so I chopped an inch or so off the bottom in the back, but it was a poor job. His hair is very blond, thin but long on top and very thick and crazy in the back.

I think it's time for a haircut, but I am pretty positive he will not hold still or tolerate it very well. I'm thinking about just taking the clippers at home (the the longest attachment on it) so that we can do it in stages, rather than try to rush it at a hair cutting place.

When did you give your LO his first hair cut? How did you do it? How did they tolerate it and what did you doto make it go smoothly?
