@muffinsmuffins: @pinkb: Thank you for the suggestions!

My gut tells me that he just doesn't take our DCP very seriously. She is a very soft-spoken, quiet person and my husband and I are more firm (we are both classroom teachers.) We literally have very few issues with him and we just went to a birthday party and he was playing with other kids for hours without a single issue.
So, we are talking to a different in home preschool and they are much more firm/higher expectations for behavior. I know my son can meet them. Our current DCP is incredible, but maybe just not for my son. I read this on the Janet Lansbury site and was like "yes! That's it." My son is not perfect, I just think he needs a different environment.

DD was/is speech and language delayed. I agree with @muffinsmuffins: about a communication board. Our preschool had a quite feelings corner instead of timeout. The pictures of different feelings really helped her be able to communicate better how she was feeling and I think even understand better how she was feeling and how to cope. We didn't have the same issues you are having rather she use to bite herself. But the feeling corner worked so well I planned to copy it at our house. Also before preschool she was in an inhome care center and the first time she was really bad, I think she bit another little girl. I had a long talk with her and repeated myself when we got ready to go and in the car on the way. Just how hurtful it was and other ways to express herself. We used stomping, clapping, screaming if need be or go get the adult. At that time she was 2.5 and couldn't talk but she could understand and it never happened again. I hope it gets better for you.

What about a communication board? Pictures of common things he would want or need as he can point to them. This helped DS when he wasn’t able to communicate with the other kids, specifically things like stop, I don’t like that, my turn/your turn. See when this behaviour seems to start and bring some suggestions to your SLP. They can make some laminated print outs if needed.

Talk to your speech therapist about what his receptive and expressive language is like. My guess is his expressive language is low so he is lashing out at daycare. Your speech therapist could provide some suggestions of things they can do at daycare to help communicate better.

@crazydoglady: maybe your therapist can go and observe? She could offer strategies and interventions for the DCP to use to help him when he needs to communicate and gets frustrated?

@Amorini: He's at an in-home preschool that is really interactive, fun, and academic. There is the "baby room" and DS is on the toddler side with 4 (at most) other toddlers ranging in age from 2-5. I have suggested observing him and the DCP liked the idea.
I've considered having him see a child psychologist or bringing it up to the pediatrician (which I will next appt) but it doesn't happen at home or in other contexts, so it doesn't appear to be chemical but more behavioral/social.

@crazydoglady: This sounds so stressful! My DS is not even 1.5 so I’m not familiar with daycare issues at that age, but I have tried to troubleshoot a few things happening in DS’s class recently. So for what it’s worth...

What is the daycare setting like (in-home? how many kids? mixed ages?) Is there any way that you can observe him interacting with the others? (Our daycare has one-way glass so I can watch without interfering.)

Have you talked with the pediatrician? Would you consider doing some troubleshooting with a child psychologist? It just makes me wonder if the speech delay is tied to the behavior issues and getting some assistance with that from a professional could help you be pro-active. A friend of mine is a child psychologist and her practice offers a social group playtime so it’s very dynamic and practical at the same time. Just a shot in the dark, but hope you can figure it out!

I’m sorry. That sounds so stressful. Have you considered getting him language therapy to help him with his communication?

DS (2.5) has been going to his new daycare since December and things were going great until a few weeks ago when he was out of daycare for over a week due to illness. Since then, he is making everyone's life miserable there. He doesn't go down to naps, hits the other kids completely unprovoked, doesn't follow directions for circle time etc. Apparently, he threw a chair this week and broke it. It's not that he was perfect before but he mostly had good days.

She said that she puts him directly in time out and talks to him about gentle hands, etc. Ulimately, he is taking away from the positive environment and she said she constantly has to shadow him. Just today, a little girl told him I was here and he smacked her in the face. I was appalled. He very rarely hits us at home and does it when playing or upset, not randomly. So, he behaves very differently at daycare. I should add that he is extremely speech delayed and doesn't seem to know how to communicate with the other kids (who are more advanced speech-wise.)

Our DCP said its odd because she has seen him be really good and knows he can be so sweet. We are going to go to a parent/teacher conference next week and she is really willing to work with us and wants to solve the problem instead of kicking him out and making it someone else's problem. I appreciate that so much, but I am feeling lost. If things don't change, I know he will be out. I wish I could just stay home but we can't afford it. What can we do? Any suggestions, insights, anecdotes?

Eta: He is in speech therapy and making great strides there but getting worse at daycare.
