This is actually how my son started putting himself to sleep. Just decided he didn't need me or want me to put him to sleep anymore. He's put himself to sleep ever since, so I hope it's the same for you!

@FutureMrsMcK: They can do a lot more than we give them credit for! I know when my DD nurses like that its usually because she is over tired or there is too much stimulation going on.

So I usually need to nurse DS to sleep at night--he won't sleep unless I do. Last night he didn't really have an interest in nursing OR sleeping. He'd been up for 4 hours, I'd been trying to get him down for an hour and a half. I gave us both a break at one point and handed him over to DH while I did the dishes, then I took him back into our bed and tried to nurse him again. He would nurse for MAYBE two seconds and then pull off and look around, nurse for MAYBE two second and then pull off and look around, and so on.

After a few minutes this got really old for me. I was starting to feel frustrated, so I put him down in his pack n play (at the foot of our bed) for a few minutes while I went to finish cleaning the kitchen.

Now my son is very clingy. I don't necessarily need to be holding him but he'd prefer it, and we need to be paying active attention to him. I thought I'd maybe get a minute or two of breathing time before he realized he'd been left alone in a room and start screaming. 5 minutes in I don't hear anything. I peek in and he's playing with his hands, quiet as a mouse. I leave him be. 5 minutes after that I still haven't heard anything, so I peek in again and he's completely zonked to the world, and slept for 6 hours!

I'm not so naive as to think this will be a trend, but I'm going to try it again tonight and hope for the best!
