@Mama Bird: we ended up canceling his EI evaluation because 2 reasons. My pedi suggested I attempt the thicker purses first, since we didn't qualify for any discount with EI, it's would be around 600$ a month the therapist I talked to stated. And also he started crawling and pulling hisself up within the month we were waiting for the appt. so essentially I'm just waiting for him to catch up on his food issues. My ped has been practicing for 25 years so I trust his judgment that he's seen this before. So I'm trying it his way first

@Jackiedavis87: Also, don't get too frustrated. DS1 had much more severe reflux than DS2 and their interest in food is night and day. If food has always been a source of heartburn and pain for you, then its totally understandable that its not a source of comfort or something to get all that excited about. So working on finding foods he really likes is a good gateway. DS1 has always loved plain white sticky rice, watermelon, banana, yogurt melts, and yogurt. So we fed that a lot to him in and moved to bigger pieces. Sometimes we would hand feed him a few bites and then put the rest on his tray. If its something tacky or sticky like mashed banana or yogurt or sticky grains of rice, it can just stick to his hands and he can get it to his mouth.

Maybe you just have a stubborn kid. My youngest is like that, she gave DH such a hard time when he was with her, and then I got all these complaints from day care about her not holding her bottle. I really haven't found any awesome trick for teaching her anything - she does it when she feels like it, and that's that. It's just a matter of waiting.

I think you posted earlier that you were going to set up an early intervention appointment though... how did that go?

@Jackiedavis87: The Take n Toss ones and the Tommee Tippee should be at Walmart. Zoomi is on Amazon.

My boys have done really well on rice porridges. Basically, we boil cooked rice with a lot of water or broth and finely minced veggies, whisk in an egg at the end of cooking for protein and to thicken it up, and feed. Sometimes we add some cheese, sometimes a drizzle of sesame oil, and we can swap out the veggies with whatever we have. Eventually we could make them thicker and chunkier and add soft minced tofue, meat or shrimp. I liked it because they always got a balanced meal between that and some quartered blueberries or bits of banana.

@Jackiedavis87: The sippy is slightly different (because kiddos are encouraged from the time it's introduced to hold it themselves), but I don't consider bottle holding to be a milestone/expected skill. Some kids do and some kids don't. I think it's unrealistic to expect a baby to start holding his own bottle (especially when you consider that he doesn't put anything in his mouth other than his hands). And. SO WHAT if you *baby* him . . . he's still a baby at 13 months!

@Jackiedavis87: With both of my girls, we moved towards dropping bottles after they were 1. Both of my kids have also loved water out of straw cups, but not milk (milk alternative in our case), so essentially, they just phase out milks entirely. Also, for both of our girls, we kept a bedtime bottle for a loooong time after dropping all the daytime bottles. I think with my oldest we finally stopped the bedtime bottle at 20 months. My youngest is 17 months and still gets the bedtime bottle--she *just* started holding it and drinking it while we read her a story.

@gingerbebe: so I should try straw cup, I'm going to check if I can find that one at Walmart! The reason he gets 4 to 5 bottle still is because he's still mostly on purees, it's been a difficult transition to solid food, with lots of gagging and a few instances of throwing up. So realistically he's eating at a 6-8month level. The ped has suggested that I just purée his food slightly thicker with more grainy texture, but it's still been a LONG road.

DS1 never held a bottle and frankly never understood sippy cups until he was learning open cup closer to 2. (Same rage issues). He did get a straw cup (we taught him using the take and toss straw cups bc you can squeeze liquid up them) and he used the ones with a handle for a long time. But he couldn't use any straw cup with hard resistance (so the leakproof ones didn't work for us). He used Tommee Tippee straw cups on the go and Zoomi cups at home.

DS2 won't hold his bottles either - he's 8 months.

We dropped bottles at a year but my kiddos STTN. We just left straw cups of water out everywhere and gave straw cups of formula or milk at mealtimes. We offered yogurt for snack once a day too. Our ped said 8-12oz of milk a day is actually fine after 1 year.

DS1 was also slow on self feeding - we put lots of table food but hand/spoon fed him for a long time - closer to 16-18 months.

Both my boys had reflux.

But DS1 is 28 months and he's just fine at open cup, utensils, and self-feeding so don't worry!

@2littlepumpkins: I guess that makes sense lol, it's just that he still has 1 sometimes 2 bottles over night on top of the 3 during the day, and I'm sooooooo over hold his bottles at night lol. Last night was a 2x night which is why I'm throwing such a fit today

@Anagram: when did you stop using bottles? When did he start self feeding? DS doesn't self feed either, he doesn't put toys or food or anything but his own fingers in his mouth. From what I understand it's a pretty common issue with children who had severe reflux as babies, which he did.

@Jackiedavis87: my daughter never really held her bottle. I never thought of bottle holding as a necessity- if I had been breastfeeding, it wouldn't be an issue, right? Sippy cups she held, but did the straw ones so she didn't have to tip anything back for a long time.

Neither of our kids have been into holding their own bottles, much to the chagrin of our daycare teachers and now our nanny. Every kid is different. They had no problems feeding themselves finger foods when it was time, and eventually we were off bottles completely. But they didnt hold their own bottles ever, right up until we stopped using them.

@LBee: this is what I was afraid of, the problem is he will scream for a solid 5 minutes and them just refuse to drink! :crying: I am terrible at hearing him cry, like I am super extra sensitive to it. When DH was trying to get him to hold his bottle I had to go outside I couldn't stand listening to him scream. I suppose I will have to suck it up And put my big girl pants on :meh: . Thanks for your suggestion!

Honestly, I'd just stop making it an option for you to hold it. If he's thirsty, he will figure it out. My son started feeding himself with a spoon really early and I remember my friend (who had a child a similar age) asking how we got him to do it. We said that we just stopped offering to do it and he figured it out pretty fast.

If you had the option of someone feeding you as opposed to feeding yourself and knew they would do it.... would you feel very motivated to do it yourself?

DS is still not holding his bottle/sippy at 13mo. The problem is that he's perfectly capable of doing it, because he has done it on a rare occasion, it in no way a regular thing. DH says that I'm babying him, because the few times he has held it, it's been for him. When I attempt to bring his hands up to his bottle he gets angry. When I set the bottle in front of him he just screams and kicks it with his feet. I'm just not sure what different techniques I should be trying, or if it'll eventually click that he needs to hold it and I'm just not being patient enough. Anyone have any advice or deal with the same issue?
