My oldest didn't eat finger food for a very long time. Probably closer to turning 1. I didn't worry b/c I figured that he would when he's ready. With my second, he's 9 months now and he LOVES to grab food to eat on his own. He can even rice, even if it gets all over the place. My two boys are so different at the same age. I wouldn't worry too much b/c he'll tell you when he's ready. The only regret I did with my oldest is that I fed him until he was 2.5 years-old. Yep, way too long. I had to nip it in the bud when he started preschool and was expecting his teachers to feed him. LOL! Now he eats on his own and eats well. It just takes him FOREVER to eat b/c he likes to play around when he eats. There's always something! ;)

Thank you for the reassurance ladies! I was getting pretty stressed out. But today he started eating some puffs and yogurt melts! I'm not going to stress about it any more. He will eat when he is ready.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, your LO will get there. He won't be eating puree's in kindergarten. :) I think you are doing it right, just keep offering it.

I'm not sure I would worry about it yet. When you went for your 6 month appt did the ped suggest you start finger foods before 9 months? I only ask because I asked ours about it at 6 months and he said just do purees and we'll worry about harder foods later.

Maybe he's more worried about your lo working on the pincer grasp than anything else?

I would keep offering but don't be overly concerned as long as he is getting some form of nutrition. My son didn't really get into finger foods until 10 or 11 months.

My friend had that issue. She wasn't really eating finger foods until after one. She would offer them to her and she didn't want them, so she obviously had to keep with the purees so she would eat something. But now she's 16 months and eating finger foods, all of a sudden one day she was fine with them. Sometimes babies just like to do things on their own time I think.

P is almost 9 months and doesn't even really eat solids. She's ebf and I know that as far as nutrition & fat goes, she get's all she needs from me. I've gotten lectured from our pedi too.... The way I figure it I've done my research and keep up with her growth & development so there's no reason to push her into something she's clearly not ready for.

You can't force him to eat. =/

DS is 9.5 months old. His pediatrician lectured me and said he should be eating finger foods by now. The last two months I have offered him various things but he just never seemed interested. So the last two weeks I have been offering him something at every meal. We have tried eggs, peas, broccoli, zucchini, avocado, banana, toast with avocado spread on it, Cheerios, carrots, puffs, yogurt melts, pretty much whatever I have. I've cut things in finger size, I cut them in bite size. He just won't eat them. But he eats his purées like a champ. We have been feeding him the stage 3 chunky stuff so I don't think it's a texture thing.

Is there anything else I should try? When did your LO start eating finger foods?
