Thanks for everyone's advice! I went out yesterday at lunch and bought a new card (I cannot remember the brand but the only one they had started with a V, my old SD card was a sandisk). Anywho, I took it home and tried it out tethered into my mac and......

IT WORKED! I still would really like to format my camera and get the proper software for it, but for now I'm just happy I can take photos and retrieve them!

Thank you all so much. :D

I agree with everyone who suggested getting a card reader. I bought mine in a package with an SD card. It's so much more convenient. I wonder if inserting it into a Mac and then into a PC may have done something to the card? I believe just like external drives, you format it to your specific computer type (PC or Mac), and maybe that messed it up somehow. Hope you get as much as you can off that card. I agree with others that you should trash the card - it's probably unreliable now. It doesn't sound like a camera problem but a card problem...

Sounds like the card to me too. Even if formatting it worked, I'd be inclined to just trash the card and not bother with it anymore. You can get a 16 or 32 gig Sony, Sandisk (good names) card for cheap, like 10-20 dollars now. My friend was on her way to vacation and her card failed... she was making a stop at her in laws where she reformatted and it worked. So she continued on to their cruise where it failed again and she was only able to recover 25% of the pictures. At the cost of what cards are now, its not worth risking losing pictures if the card is flaky.

@.twist.: I had to request another one from the photographer. I was able to see them when I popped in the USB and I was lazy about putting them on my external HD. Finally when I went to look at them the 4th or 5th time ... kaput.

It was totally karma kicking me in the ass for always scoffing at people that are anal about removing their devices properly. Ok tech gods - I hear ya! Thanks.

Hopefully the new SD card works out for you!

@.twist.: formatting the memory card can help with corruption. Look in your manual and it should tell you how to format the card. I did this with my Canon and i always use the cord to upload images and I've never had a problem.

I also haven't installed the software because the camera was a gift from my FIL who also has a Nikon, although he has the Nikon D5100 and he somehow mixed the discs up, so I have the software for the D5100 but not the D3100. He can't find the 3100 disc... :/

It does sound like the card. Thats something I learned with having my fancy DSLR. Do not cheap out on a card because they are slow at taking pictures and they are hit or miss when trying to get files from them.

@.twist.: I did this with a USB (it was our wedding pictures -ah-mazing). It wouldn't read and was a total disaster. I don't safely remove things either and I think that is what happened. It ended up being the USB. The slot was moody for a few days after that, but works.

ETA: I have a macbook pro

Yeah, it's not the camera. When tethering a camera to a Mac, it will only register the camera in iPhoto, and you'll need to turn the camera on. The very best way to transfer photos would be a card reader (they make USB ones), which should cost less than $20. They sell them almost everywhere. Lastly, your camera should have come with the Nikon transfer software. I hate that program, but it will read your camera.

I don't think it's a problem with your camera but with the SD Card. I don't think you crashed the SD either, but sometimes they start to fail.

I used the cheap-y one that came with my nikon for awhile and it started acting weird. I got nervous so I splurged for a fancy one and haven't had any problems for awhile!

Hey ladies, I really need some camera help.

I own a Nikon D3100 DSLR Camera. I love it.

HOWEVER, recently I haven't been able to get any of my photos off it.

I have a 2008 Macbook and it doesn't have a SD card slot so I usually just tether it in with the USB cord. All of a sudden that stopped working. I thought it was the cord but even after getting a new one it still didn't work. It doesn't register that my camera is even tethered in.

My husband has a HP laptop and it does have an SD card slot so I took the SD card out and tried it in there. It worked! So, I got all my photos off the camera that I wanted and took the SD card out.

Later, I put it back into my husbands computer to get some more photos off the camera and bam. It didn't work. It doesn't even register that there is an SD card inserted into the slot.

This camera shouldn't be having these kinds of problems. I haven't had it that long and it was brand new when I got it. I will admit that I'm not great about "safety removal" of devices, and never have been, but I've also never had any problems before with any of my previous cameras.

Can anyone shed some light on this situation for me? Or do I need to take it to a camera store and have them look at it?
