@hellocupcake: knowing that, I would do the charter school. I tend to look at the long game, and in my area, middle school is the most at risk population right now, with a ton of changes to the schedule, approach, etc.

I had a similar choice, doing a dual language k-5 program or a k-8 IB and I chose the IB program because it went to 8th grade.

@lamariniere: I was thinking the same thing, changing schools shouldn't be a huge deal. Especially since she is already on the friendlier, more outgoing side of personalities so I'm hoping it continues and she adjusts fine.

@looch: We would basically be gambling if we wait until 6th grade. As far as enrollment for Kinder, I will still be working with the school so we will have the priority; but I'm not sure that will be true 6 years from now. I don't think the public schools in our area are the best (judging only by test scores), but they aren't horrible either.

What is the process to get into the charter school, is it lottery? If it is, you might not be able to get in unless you started at K (assuming you got in via the lottery). There might be a few slots open in the higher grades, but those seem to go to siblings when they do open up in my experience.

As for language, the dual language programs are phenomenal and I would put my child in one, but to your point, at the moment, there is no program past 5th grade in my district and I am not sure what we'd do past that.

My vote would be for the immersion program. We are a bilingual household and my LOs also speak a 3rd language. Our older LO is in kindergarten this year and speaking his 2nd and 3rd languages (and not his 1st at all). From what I've seen with my two LOs, the gift of language is invaluable. It's the easiest time for them to learn with little effort and the payoff is huge. It's incredible to watch my kids at the local playground when they play with other children and they effortlessly switch between languages and can communicate with just about everyone.
As for not staying in the same school, I personally don't think it's a big deal to change schools later and plenty of people have the experience of moving or switching schools at some point.

There is this pretty great charter school that is K-12th grade. I have worked as a substitute there the past year and love a lot of things about the school. I would love for my daughter to go here, but there is a dual language immersion program from K-5th grade offered at the local public school. I was thinking I could apply for the dual immersion program, let her go there and hope to transfer her in 6th grade; but, then she would miss being in the same school as her peers for the first 6 years of her education. Plus, is dual immersion even worth a try? We are a bilingual household although we lean heavily towards English so I thought the program would encourage us to teach her more Spanish. The charter school offers Spanish classes once a week from K-6th so there would be some exposure, just not as much.

Opinions? What would you do?
