@illumina: oh! I didn't realize you were in the UK so close. Unfortunately the cities are quite spread out and there isn't much in between. I second Kilkenny for the castle and cute town, but not a day trip. I'm not really sure there are short day trips from Dublin. Galway was great too, a bigger city than Kilkenny, but all the way on the other side of Ireland. Really I though every little town was really pleasant to wander around, but that's in comparison to the US where our towns are no where near as old and quaint as in Europe, so you may not be so impressed as I am .

I loved Kilkenny. We rented a car and went down there for 2 nights and explored the castle and the town. Very cute and a pretty river walk area. It is very hilly and terraced, so a stroller might not work, just a heads up.

@PurplePumps: it would be in October, so the weather could be anything really! We live in the U.K. so we are used to miserable weather! We would have to pay for LO's seat, but it's pretty cheap anyway as we're on the west of the U.K.

Are there any other places in Ireland you'd recommend?

It depends on when you're going and the weather imo. There's a nice downtown and lots of wandering to do and pubs/food to try, but I'm not sure how much of it is very kid oriented (no LO's, so I wasn't paying attention to that). We went in end of May and it was still cold, wet and pretty miserable (though we traveled around Ireland and did not stay in Dublin the whole time so I'm not sure how much it varies too) so I can't imagine being out all day with a toddler.

Sorry that probably didn't help much since I don't really remember details of what to see/do, but for me, if the weather is decent at that time of year, I were on the east coast, so that it was a relatively short inexpensive flight, especially if LO didn't need his/own ticket, even if it wasn't on your must see list, I think everywhere is worth experiencing esp if hotel and maybe food is covered. (Though I'm someone who went to Taipei for a week and a half just because DH was there for work so I figured I'd go check it out even though it wasnt on my list either, but I know everything kinda changes with a 2 yr old... )

DH has to go to Dublin for work next year and I'm trying to decide whether LO and I should accompany him and do our own thing during the day.

I don't know much about the area and it's never been on my must-see list, so just wondering what it is like there and if there will be enough to keep me and a 2yr old occupied for a few days. Happy to hire a car and take day trips further afield if there's plenty to see nearby.
