@Cherrybee: Or I hate when I stand over him FOREVER waiting for it to fall out and it doesn't so I walk back to my room. And the moment I lay down, he starts fussing/whimpering because the pacifier fell out! *face palm*

@Foodnerd81: hahaha! Yeah, this morning was a bit of a low point for me! Cackle!! I had the monitor on silent and I just sat there... watching.... waiting.... then I pounced every time she spat it out!! I like to dress it up as a test, an experiment, to see if it was the fussing (for the dummy) that wakes her up and contributes to the short naps but lets be honest, I just wanted her to sleep so she would be cheerful! Wrapped round her finger!!

@Cherrybee: C had never really taken to the paci, which is a blessing in that we won't have to wean from it, and a curse in that she isn't soothed by anything like that. I just wanted to comment on how utterly ridiculous it is how these teeny little creatures have us wrapped around their diggers nhoveringboutside her door for two hours, I realized I'm messing up my shoulder from they way I ever so carefully put her down.... These kids.

Another paci mom....my son is an addict and he needs it to sleep. I had to reinsert it until he figured out how to put it back in. I do not recommend that at all!

This is DS!!! Following along to see what others say. All these swaddle weaning and sleep training threads lately have stirred up TONS of questions from me.

I'm a paci mom..... It's terrible. Both of mine take them and I need to stop (don't judge!). What we ended up doing with DS, because this was a problem for him as well, was put many pacis in his crib so that if one fell out he could grab another, granted he sounds like he was much older than your LO. We have done CIO with both using the paci, and it didn't really affect the outcome of the training. But, now I have to wean them from it. I say, if it looks like it'll be easy to get the Dummy away, do it. I wish I had done it earlier with mine.

We sleep trained with a pacifier (a wubbanub specifically) at just shy of 6 months old. Since about 5 months, she's been able to pick it up by the legs and stick it in her own mouth. It's really freaking amazing, actually. We havent' had to paci wean her because she just sticks it in her mouth herself. And she still does it. She finds it at night (uses it as a pillow) and when she wants it, in it goes. When she was younger, it stayed on her chest and she was able to have it near her. She ended up developing a lovey type association with it and will snuggle with it now, even if the tip isn't in her mouth.

Highly recommend the wubbanub if you're interested in keeping the paci and think your LO may take to doing it herself :)

We dropped the paci cold turkey for naps and night time when we nap trained at 5 months. We replaced it with a lovey that he could use to soothe himself. We also swaddle weaned at the same time. I think if you suffer through the paci re insertion period, eventually babies are able to replace the pacis themselves, so a lot of people leave a few scattered in the crib. I figured I might as well get rid of it sooner rather than later, and the paci re insertion was driving me crazy.

I don't think you're doing anything bad by using it now, before you sleep train though. It's all about whatever gets you through this tough period!

Did anyone sleep train a baby who needed a dummy to get to sleep? What happened? How did it work?

My LO needs her dummy to get to sleep. Its a miracle device in that when she is really tired it only takes one suck for her eyes to close! At nap time, she fights that dummy, pushing it away with her tongue, crying..... but as soon as she takes that first, reluctant suck - bam! Asleep!

But I also think that the dummy is causing our short nap problem because when she wakes from her first full sleep cycle she needs her dummy to fall back to sleep. Then, because she is so sleepy, her jaw slackens after a few sucks, the dummy falls out and she wakes slightly - cue crying. I just got a two hour morning nap out of her by sitting outside the nursery door with the monitor and reinserting the dummy every time it fell out (approx every 10 mins). She had her usual half hour stretch, followed by an hour of this absurdity, before she drifted off into another half hour stretch and didn't fuss when she lost the dummy.

Im pretty sure that CIO will be for us when she is old enough. If she could soothe herself back to sleep she would be an epic sleeper. But what do I do about her dummy? Let her start the nap with it but if she loses it she loses it? Or should I remove the dummy entirely? If so, am I doing more harm than good using it as a prop now?

Its interesting to note that she doesn't need her dummy through the night. She has it at the start of approx half of all nights and does need it reinserting a few times at first but once she is asleep for the night, she spits it out and doesn't need it, even after her night feeds.
