@HappyBaker: It was around $2600. That included fixing the floor, tile installation, toilet installation, and all materials and haul away. The install team put in our sink for free because they were behind on the tile work that was a nice bonus.

@avivoca: That is great to hear! I think ours might be due to water damage as well - do you remember ballpark how much all that work cost if you had someone else do it?

We had this problem when we moved into our house. It turns out that there was significant water damage from a leak long ago. Once we repaired the joists and installed a new subfloor, the ceramic tile we chose went on beautifully and almost two years later still looks great without any cracks.

@MamaG: @oliviaoblivia: @Shizaz: Thanks, good to know! I assumed ceramic was not durable because we have had so many issues, but it makes sense if it's laid on something crappy that would be the reason!

My parents have ceramic tiles in their bathroom and it has never had any issues, even in the basement (where I feel like it would be most likely to crack). I think if you fix the subfloor it would be fine!

Ceramic is the most durable flooring.it sucks to replace the subfloor but once you do you're floor will last a long time.

After the subfloor is fixed any ceramic tile should be fine. We have ceramic in our bathrooms and kitchen. We've had a few knicks in our kitchen floor from things being dropped but no cracks or breaks.

Our bathroom floor problem is someone put tile on top of vinyl. That's not wise! Vinyl provides a cushion, so our tiles "rock" and all of the grout is cracked and coming out.

In a prior house, I had to have subfloor replaced in a bathroom and it wasn't that big of a deal.

@HappyBaker: Yea if your subfloor is that bad, you'll need a lot of work to get it smooth and level.

@Mamaof2: Glad it's not just me! Ours is sooo bad, it's like shards of tile all over the place. We were going to DIY fix it ourselves because laying tile isn't really that hard, but with how bad the sub floor is I'm thinking we're just going to have someone professional fix it!

@HappyBaker: ugh we have the same issue! I thought it was just crappy tile but apparently the sub floor is the issue! (as told by the contractor)

So I would say replace the subfloor and the tile would be fine!

We need to redo the floor in our half bath - previous owners put down ceramic tile but the subfloor is a mess so the tiles literally crack more every time you walk on it! For now we've just put a rug over most of the floor (so you don't hurt your feet!) but we really need to replace and fix the floor this summer.

If our subfloor was fixed, would ceramic tile be durable / not crack? Or is there another type of tile that would be better? I don't love most vinyl but I know that obviously would be the most durable! Ideally I'm looking for something that if I drop my hairdryer on it won't shatter!
