They're pretty much impossible to find in stores unless you go with Tivo (which has a monthly fee, or you can just to pay one lifetime fee per box, but if you're doing this to save money it's still going to be a bit pricey) so no first-hand experience, but I'd imagine that it would have to have a digital tuner/coaxial connection on it so that you could run your antenna through it. So it would go antenna--->DVR--->TV.

If the shows you watch are available on Hulu, you could always buy a Roku box (they start around $50.) It uses your wireless internet and you can watch shows the day after they air, I think it's like $8 a month.

@locavore_mama: Believe me, I hear you! I was all about the options, but decided in the end, there was no programming that I absolutely had to have, so I just stopped watching TV.

We still have the full package, maybe that's why I gave it up so easily? If I want it, it's right there, lol.

@looch: hahaha tbh I get maybe 45 min of TV a day. But if I didn't have it at all I think I will miss it! ;)

But DVR is definitely not a necessity. Just seeing what options there are out there.

@locavore_mama: Well my parents have basic cable. But if they didn't have that, I think there are still "free" channels that come across the wire.

I can ask my parents what they have if you're interested! They have a DVR that works just like a VCR. Basically you have to program it to record a time and channel - you can't just say "Record The Bachelor" because without the Cable service, it doesn't have access to the digital guide. But you just have to buy the box and hook it up and you're all set to go!

We've looked into Tivo! That might work for you. Or if you are techy you can probably figure out how to record shows using your computer.

I've seen a few people mention using DVR after dropping cable. How does that work?

mrs wagon mentioned Aereo but that's not offered in my area.
Do you pay a one time fee or is there still a monthly fee to use this?
