I stopped highlighting my hair just before I got pregnant with my first. I haven't highlighted since and now I'm pregnant again. To tell you the truth, I'm not sure if I will ever highlight again, since I just keep thinking of all the chemicals that are so close to the brain...

I always dye my hair... it's been every color. About two months ago I went red violet (I'm brunette usually) and literally the day before I got my BFP I planned on going back to brunette but decided to put it off for a week. Well, I got my BFP and I'm too afraid to use dye in the first trimester so I'm waiting the 7 more weeks to go back to my natural color and I'm going to have them use ammonia free.

@bluestriped bee: my OB said no, don't do it, and especially not in your first trimester. So, I never did, but if I was going to I would do foils, make sure the area was ventilated, and also discuss a less toxic option for color with my stylist (she offered me one). Apparently lots of people do it, but that's my experience.

My midwives said it was fine. My colorist said the desired color may not take due to pregnancy hormones, and recommends I hold off for that reason. I'm trying to go from natural dark brown to copper though. Lift!

@bluestriped bee: I wouldn't really worry, I think. I'd be mostly worried that the area be well ventilated. Though I only highlight, so I'm not sure how I'd feel about all over color while pregnant. I have to get mine done soon, actually!

I talked to both my stylist and my midwife and got the okays from both.

My stylist said all her coworkers colored their hair during pregnancy, but as long as the area if pretty well-ventilated it's okay. And you can usually use all-over foils instead of rubbing on scalp.

also, i avoided it during the first trimester as well, when baby is most susceptible to harm. I think I waited til about 16 weeks?

my doc said it was fine. the best thing to do is use natural instincts or something you only leave on for like 10 mins. that's what i did. that and dont do it till you are out of the first trimester just in case. don't rub it into your scalp. you should be fine. :)

I've had my hair colored 3 times including once during the first trimester. I wasn't even worried about the fumes since hairstylists aren't told to stop coloring during pregnancy. To me if it was really a risk those girls wouldn't be able to work during that time.

My midwife said it was fine, but to wait until after the first trimester. I dyed it at 14 weeks, and even in a very well-ventilated area (in the kitchen, fans on and door and windows open), the smell was absolutely overwhelming. The next time it needs to be done I'll go to a salon.

I stopped dying my hair when I got pregnant. My stylist was under the impression that hi-lights weren't bad for pregnant women, because they don't actually saturate your scalp. And my OBGYN didn't really express too much concern about it. But, I just opted to be on the safe side and forego getting my hair did... and I still don't because I've become so cost conscious I can't get myself to spend the dough.

Hmm, I will have to look into this. I use Natural Instincts ammonia free 28 week wash out dye, so it's probably better than the average dye job. I wouldn't want to not dye it for ten months, but I will if it's a danger.

My doc said don't so I didn't, but what I've read since seems to indicate its mostly a first trimester concern. I found my first grey hair when I was 17, and I'm 34 now and it's soooo noticeable. I really hope it's not an issue, or during breastfeeding, cos my hair has been au naturale since July and if I can't colour it til I stop bf... I'll be like a flippin badger!

I've never read any recent conclusive data that says its harmful. No one I talked to that would be in a position to have a knowledgable opinion (i.e., doctors, nurses, etc.) said it was harmful or even something to worry about. I've been coloring my hair like normal.
