Update: After another rough night, without the swing helping and us sleeping together on the couch after 3am, we went to the pediatrician this morning. Turns out she has the start of an ear infection so we got some Amoxicillin and lots of cuddles today! She did have a low fever this morning - 100.3 and then 99.something but was in the 99 at the doctor. Otherwise the nighttime fussiness was really my only sign. Thanks all!!

Was there a cold or congestion prior? That was always the trigger for my son. First a cold or congestion, then 2 weeks or so later, an ear infection, with a fever. I knew when a dose if Advil would make him act normal for a few hours.

DS has had 5 ear infections and none with a fever. They only way I could tell with him was that he wouldn't want his bottles at daycare (but would nurse fine) and his sleep would get worse.

I'd take her in, at least for the peace of mind.
Have you tried Tylenol?

E has a double ear infection right now. Here were my clues:
-crappy sleepy
- super fussy/clingy
-threw his food at his food therapist
-waited to nurse more often
-a few days later digging at his ears with his fingers

We are now on the second antibiotic because the first didn't appear to be helping. He seems to be feeling better now.

@LindsayInNY: We're on round 2 of ear tubes, so we're pros at ear infections, but I would still say I'm about 50-50 on correctly guessing if she has one.

When she gets one, she gets a little cranky and clingy and is a horrible sleeper. She never runs a fever with them. The bad sleep is usually my cue to bring her in.

We've been through two sets of ear tubes at 3 years old so we've seen pretty much everything when it comes to ear infections, but my LO never runs a fever with them. I would say take your LO to the pediatrician. Regardless of the cause, your LO has been acting unlike herself for a few days in a row now, and I always think that warrants a check to see what's going on.

Agree with the others - only once I think has LO had a fever with an ear infection.

LO has never shown the classic signs. The only way I can tell is that she is really irritable night & day. That's enough for me to take her in. A couple times she has had a cough and runny nose but she's also had a couple with zero symptoms other than crankiness.

Agree with mamasig. My DD has had three ear infections and only one with a fever. The first she did have a fever and that was her only sign of infection. The second I took her to the dr for pink eye. No pink eye the ear infection was making her eyes red. The third was diagnosed yesterday and we were at the dr for a completely different reason. Bottom line I would take her in. I have gone a few times thinking it was an ear infection cause she doesn't always show the classic signs fever, pulling ears, extra fussy.

What you're describing makes a lot of sense, but it didn't apply to LO. He actually slept fine but was SO.FUSSY during the day it was insane. He did have a very low-grade fever to go with it but yeah I think the symptoms of an ear infection are kinda general so I think I would probably call the Dr tomorrow. Never a bad thing to rule things out.

my sons only ear infection was low grade / no fever paired with horrible nights - not sleeping, crying in bed. He usually sleeps really well so it was pretty clear something was wrong and then the dr easily saw it when we took him in.

@sapphire: Actually out of the 15+ ear infections between my two boys, I think they had a low fever maybe twice. Fevers aren't always a common sign.

Yes, the pressure from laying flat would make them cry. Also any kind of congestion - cough or runny nose - was a sign for both my boys. They usually didn't have fevers. They may be a little extra whiny and not eat as well. But basically for my kids, any congestion generally led to an ear infection.

Very uncommon to have an ear infection without a fever. And usually they are more persistently fussy rather than just at night time. Most coughs are worse at night.

With that said, with your concerns, certainly wouldn't be wrong to bring her in to see her doctor!

How do you know if your LO might have an ear infection?

DD has had a cough for a week now. She had been sleeping okay but now we're on night two of crap sleep. She'll cough and wake up. She'll cry and not be consoled. She'll be asleep and wake up as soon as she's put down. Last night was every 2 hours until we put her in the swing. Tonight she lasted about 2 hours and I can see how it's going so she's in the swing already... I just wonder if I should be calling the pediatrician at this point. My MIL said frequent wake ups when laid down can be an ear infection sign so I'm worried now. She acts fine during the day and naps on her belly at daycare. It's just the overnight that has me concerned now. And I'm sick too so this isn't helping...
