So glad I pushed for this. In addition to thick mucus behind the eardrums the ENT noted scabs in both ears indicating pretty bad infections. No wonder she has had such a miserable fall.

@Mrs. Cereal: I think now vs January saved us about $4000!! That’s a nice vacation! (We don’t even usually meet our HDHP deductible as it’s pretty awful but this is our third minor surgery this year ... )

@bhbee: is there anything else that could be causing the eat infection such as congestion, pacifier etc because sometimes controlled ng the"cause" could help it clear up properly. We have to very aggressive with congestion with vaporisers, nebulizers, sprays and using a nose sucker to keep the pressure off their ears

@bhbee: I was going to chime in here and say that the ENT I went to two years ago was awesome about scheduling me asap to get under the wire for my deductible. I had surgery the day after Christmas and was able to save almost $1000!

So glad you're getting this taken care of!

@kayla0416: @kiddosc: following up to say you all motivated me to advocate for the next step - when we were at the pedi AGAIN for new antibiotics I finally got a dr (we see whoever is available) who agreed we should ask the ENT. I got lucky and they fit her in with my son’s follow up that we already had scheduled.

ENT was like I would do tubes no question, and we’re doing them tomorrow! I’m so happy to (hopefully) be off all the antibiotics and have a healthier winter and ensure she’s not hearing poorly. And do it after meeting our deductible :silly:

Honestly, I would try to get her into the ENT and just ask for the tubes. If she's already struggling right at the beginning of the cold/flu season, they might just agree to move right to tubes. DD didn't quite meet the criteria for tubes, but I was sick of the nonstop antibiotics and just asked for the ENT referral from our ped. The ENT got us in for tubes within 2 weeks so she could have them before we got on a flight.

My daughter had the same issue when she was 3 - the first ever ear infection, we went through every antibiotic before it finally cleared up (didn't quite get to the shots but that was next), and then she had cycles of them again and again. I took her to an ENT right away because I had my own issues as a kid so I just did it proactively, and we ultimately had her adenoids out and minimal issues since then. And now when she gets ear infections, we go right to the next step of antibiotic, I don't even let them give her Amoxicillin because it doesn't do anything.

We had the same experience with my first DD - ear infections for basically 6 months straight. Amoxicillin did nothing, Augmentin worked the first couple times, then then quit working so we did Rocephin shots. After a few months of that mess we got the ENT referral, but it took like 2 months to get an appointment with ENT and about 6 weeks to get in for tubes after that. In the meantime she was sick almost the entire time and had another round of Rocephin shots.

After all this, DD2 had 3 ear infections in 4 months and they gave us the ENT referral, we ended up getting in quick because someone cancelled, and got her in for tubes a few weeks later! They were a lot more willing to rush things a bit with that family history. Maybe with your son's history, they'd give you the ENT referral right away? I'd say it's worth asking!

The memory is a little fuzzy but our road to tubes was really fast for my now 3 year old. I feel like he started getting the ear infections in November (2017) and we did the tubes in early January. Same thing, he basically he had nonstop ear infections for two months and we knew tubes were inevitable so we did it. It was amazing as you already know. My vote is just do it!

Have you tried the garlic drops? The smell is intense but it can’t hurt. Also try to sprinkle some probiotic in her mouth before she goes to sleep to give the good bugs a chance to work while she’s sleeping. (Your resident hippie, that is also prone to ear infections :silly: )

@peaches1038: I’m so afraid we’re on this road. I hope I’m wrong ... but preparing myself to pay full price for tubes in 2020 vs 20% now!! Sooooo painful since we just had ENT surgery for brother last week

@Mama Bird: I have to take my son in for eardrum repair followup with the ENT the first week of December, maybe I should try to get an extra appt for little sister that day ... that’s interesting what was behind your issue.

@SweetCaroline: haven’t done shots yet but guessing that’s next from reading all these.

Yep DS had to have multiple rocephin injections before his infection cleared. These were administered after trialing like 3 full courses of oral antibiotics. He ended up with tubes and it was a lifesaver

For my son, this was a combo of teething-related congestion, and enlarged adenoids. He didn't need surgery in the end, but he was on antibiotics for 20 days because the standard 5-day courses never fully cleared the infection. His pedi was not able to figure out why he keeps getting ear infections, and didn't even have the tools to look up his nose and see what's going on there. So I'd recommend starting with an ENT appointment to get to the bottom of why the infection won't go away.

Could you try a different antibiotic? My son had an ear infection that wasn’t getting better and they put him on a different medicine and that cleared it up.

My daughter got tons of ear infections that amoxicillin didn’t clear, but switching to Augmentin did, so eventually we just would go straight to augmentin and that did it. But she still got one every time she got a cold. They told me the guideline for tubes so something like 4 infections within 6 months or 6 in a year? She was also 2 by the time all this started. We got referred to the ENT and even that appt took a while to get so if you are trying to do it by year end I’d look into at least getting the appt. We had her ent appt and planned to do the surgery if she had one more ear infections, but she outgrew it at that point (she had just turned 3 which is the time a lot of kids outgrow it apparently).

It never affected her hearing but it was truly miserable for 6 months.

@bhbee: has she had any Rocephin shots? My DD had hard to treat ear infections and ended up with tubes at 10 months old. I hated all the antibiotics going into her system. I did put Culturelle baby packets in her bottles, but there's the whole other issue of antibiotic resistance.

I'm not in the medical profession, but I'm pretty sure they wanted DD's ears fairly clear before surgery because I remember being nervous about that.

Good luck, ear infections are the pits.

Just curious your experience / what helped if this happened to you -

We’ve tried several antibiotics and toddler seems to get somewhat better, but then gets worse again. I worry about it affecting her hearing and there’s the whole not sleeping / general misery aspect. And her digestive system does not like antibiotics though I’m trying probiotics.

But I’m not thinking they will recommend tubes because it’s only been a month? My son had tubes for his first bday and they were amazing for helping him but he’d been sick for months (he got an ear infection every time he got a new virus which was a lot).

Sounds horrible to say but if this is leading to tubes I’d really like to get them on the current year met deductible since we have already had 2 surgeries in the family this year and paid $$$$.
