@Truth Bombs: My poor little guy knew what was happening after the second shot, he started crying when they took his weight until he fell asleep in my arms after the shot :( it was awful.

@MamaBehr: Man. That's really awful. Rocephin is NOT a fun shot to go through, but to have it not work must be so hard. I hope the ENT has a magical fix or is able to do the surgery ASAP even with a current infection.

@Truth Bombs: Yes, the shot was rocephin. He got three shots and it didn't improve his ears at all.

@Bluebonnet: We are going to start probiotics this week, his poor little behind is all raw :(

@MamaBehr: Getting an ENT appointment that soon is very quick. @yellowbird: had a great idea - maybe they can put you on the cancellations list.

I know it seems forever away, but hang in there. The ENT will be in a better position to lay out your options. A friend's daughter had tubes put in while she had an active infection, so I know it can be done.

Another thought - are you giving LO probiotics? It has really helped our kids when they are on antibiotics to also take probiotics. We've found the bad side effects (like upset stomach, etc) aren't as bad with probiotics.

@MamaBehr: Most ENTs will not do surgery with an active infection (the risk of reaction to anesthesia is higher if the kiddo is sick). But the ENT may have some better options that will work. Was the shot Rocephin? Rocephin and Suprax were successful for us to clear a persistent infection in order to get the tubes done.

@MamaBehr: I've heard that they will do the surgery with an active infection, especially if that's why they need it!

Big hugs mama! We dealt with a similar situation starting at 6 months - it definitely messed up his sleep, eating, verbal, and motor skills. However, as soon as the tubes were in he started moving and chattering away and eating better. His sleep is still bad but that's a whole different can of worms.

Once we had the initial visit with the ENT we were able to do the tube procedure pretty quickly. Could you ask the ENT office to call you if they have any cancellations?

Also, I'm pretty sure DS had an active ear infection when he got tubes.

Awh! Poor him!!! You could always call and request to be called if they have any cancellations in the next two days to get in sooner, but Thursday is super fast! I hope they can get him scheduled for the tubes ASAP!

@Smurfette: That seems SO long!!! I really hope we don't have to wait that long....

@Mamasig: End of next week would be ok, but I want him better now! ugh.

What scares me is the infection isn't clearing up! In fact, this is his first ear infection, EVER! I called the nurse line at the Ped's office, and they said the ENT might not even do the surgery with an active infection. AH! The whole point of the surgery is to help this infection go away (at least that's what I thought).

I think getting an appointment on Thurs is fast. We couldn't get one with the ENT for a month or so. Then we scheduled the surgery for three weeks later. But we did it when it fit our schedule better since she didn't have one right then. I would think given your LO situation that they would do it as soon as they can. Our ENT only does surgery's once a week. Youngest babies are scheduled first.

Poor guy!!!

Poor baby. I think it wouldn't hurt to call and ask for an earlier appointment. I would explain the situation and see if they could fit you in.

But I would guess the earliest he could get tubes would be at the end of next week. When my son got them, he needed a physical done first. Plus so many kids get them now the days book up fast. Our ENT also schedules the day with the youngest babies first and then goes by age.

I'm so sorry.

Thursday is only 2 days away. That seems pretty fast in terms of doctor schedules.

Ok, I need opinions. DS#2 is 16 months old and has had a double ear infection since April 7th. We have been on four different kinds of antibiotics, including shots of antibiotics. Yesterday, at the Ped's office, we were told he needed ear tubes because they are still infected and very pus filled. So, I called two ENT's that were on Ped's list and the earliest appointment we could get is Thursday.
So, here is my question, should I push to get him seen earlier?
This ear infection has affected his speech, his walking, his eating, and sleeping. He has lost almost two lbs since April 1st, he has stopped taking naps, and last night would only sleep on me from 2-5:30. I'm assuming that even if he is seen Thursday, they wouldn't do the tubes until early next week (which means one more week of not sleeping/eating/talking/walking).

What do I do?
