DS is just finishing up his 4th round of antibiotics for an ear infection (4 different types) and after almost 2 months seems to finally be better. We saw an ENT last week because we were very much in the "what if nothing works boat." He told us that if he keeps getting infections we'll discuss tubes, which solve the problem for most kids.

We had one case of an ear infection that the first round didn't clear up, so we had to use Cefdinir, as mentioned above. It gave my son terrible stomach issues though, so we luckily were able to not have to use it again.

I think you have to weigh tubes vs. antibiotics at some point. We were at the point that we were going the tubes route, but my son seems to have outgrown ear infections now (he's 4).

Our 20 month old has had trouble kicking his ear infections since he was 6 months old. The first batch at 6 months took 2 rounds of antibiotics to clear, the second batch of infections at 12 months took 3 rounds. When he had one at 18 months, I reminded the doctor of this and he prescribed Cefdinir instead of starting with Amox or Omnicef. It worked the first round for us. I hate doing all the antibiotics, but I'd think it's better to start with a stronger one on kids with that history vs going thru multiple rounds and then going stronger :bummed:

Dd had a persistent ear infection for 6 weeks....4 rounds of different antibiotics didn't work. Finally the dr conceded that it would not fully clear up with medicine and she would tubes. So we are waiting for our apt for those now. Luckily she no longer seems to be in extreme pain, but the dr said there is still fluid in her ears which is causing constant pressure. Hope your kids feel better soon!

We are dealing with this now too - our doc prescribed a different antibiotic when the first didn't work, and said some infections are resistant to certain drugs. Hope your LO gets better soon!

We ended up in the ER one night with Dd1 when she had a double ear infection and they gave her some strong antibiotic shot in her leg. No clue what it was but it was def stronger than amoxicillin.

When they put E on amoxicillin, it took six days to work. And our daycare lady (and her ER husband nurse) said that its a very weak antibiotic and that lots of kids (like the other little boy she's with) don't take to amoxicillin and need much stronger meds. One ended up with tubes. I hope the meds work!!!

@twoofeverything: when my daughter was 10mo she got double ear infections & could not kick them. They tried 3 different antibiotics over the course of about 6 weeks until we ended up at an ENT. She got tubes 2 weeks later & has never had a problem since (she's 3 yrs now). Good luck, ear infections are no fun!!

Hellllllllllp. Both my twins (26 mos) were diagnosed with double ear infections last week. DS seems to have kicked it with amoxicillin, but DD is still suffering, nearly 8 days after starting antibiotics. We took her back to the dr yesterday, because she's still screaming every 30-40 mins all night; the Omnicef she was on at the beginning wasn't working, so they changed her to azithromycin. She's still SO miserable! We are doing warm compresses and using prescription ear drops, pushing fluids, etc. but what if these stronger drugs still don't work? Anyone experience this?
