I bought a bulb nasal aspirator (the ones for babies) and every so often, fill it with tap water and squirt it in my ears in the shower (I don't go in deep). I figure the dr uses tap water and goes in way deeper when she irrigates my ears, so I should be ok.

I use a q-tip after a shower (not too deep) to get excess water, but I use the ear wax dissolving drops and a bulb to rinse with warm water about once a month. It's crazy how much wax comes out. Totally grosses out DH but it fascinates me.

My LOs have excess ear wax and it almost always interferes with the pediatrician being able to assess their ears fully during check-ups. She always has us drop baby oil into their ears until it fills, then wipe it away. It helps naturally draw the wax out.

@hilsy85: There were a couple times I took him to the dr last winter and she couldn't get a clear view of his ears, so she suggested putting a couple drops of baby oil into his ear to soften things up. She originally said to do it a couple times a week, but we rarely did it that often. Now we do it once a month maybe, when he settles down to nurse. He had a well check a few days ago and they looked pretty good. I think it gets worse in the winter, though.

Ugh. I hate having it removed. I usually just wait until I go in for my sinuses and/or an ear infection and they irrigate them. Torture.

@twodoghouse: what do you do about B's ears? My LO has a lot of ear wax. The dr said it's not really a big deal, except that it could make it hard to tell if he has an ear infection. I have tried Debrox (I think?) but it was torture to use it and I didn't see a huge difference after 1-2 uses.

My husband does too. He has to go to the ENT to get it removed regularly. Yet, he still doesn't believe me when I say that he has bad hearing when it's been a while...

My husband does! I'm obsessed with looking in his ears with an otoscope. If it looks really bad I make him go in to have them irrigated. The first time he did it probably had years of clogged up wax in there. Afterward he was like "whoa I can hear you clearly for the first time in a long time!" Blake has waxy ears, too, so he'll probably have to have his done when he's older too.

Do you produce a lot of ear wax? How do you get rid of it?

I just went to my semi-annual appointment with the ENT and had my wax removed. I feel sooooo good now. :)
