For my toddler, going to bed later meant a later wake up. There were times he was going to bed at 7-7:30 and waking up at 5:30-6 am. And sometimes even 5 am which we treated like a MOTN wake up and my DH went in there and laid with him but a lot of the times he wouldn't go back to sleep. He now goes to bed 8-8:30 and wakes up closer to 7 am and sometimes he sleeps in until 7:30. I just think he needs less sleep at night compared to some. He's 20 months.

But we were going through periods where it seemed no matter what time he went to bed, he was waking up at like 5:30-6 am. Maybe you just need to wait it out a bit or try pushing bedtime back? Does she seem tired at 7:30 when you put her down??

@Corduroy: I think some LOs don't fit the mold when it comes to sleep. I tried everything with my LO and I just decided that she needs less sleep than the average bear. She would regularly sleep 7:30-5:30/5:45 at that age with one nap and it was killing me. Changing bedtime did not work for us either.

Now that she is older, our saving grace has been one of those toddler clocks that you set to turn green at a certain time. Now, regardless of how early LO wakes up, she doesn't leave her room until her light turns green. It is one of the best things ever! We didn't get one until 27 months though so I am not sure how early they would work or if that is much help now.

You have to follow your baby more than the book. Sleep is so hard! Hugs!

@Smurfette: Naps are good now. She's napping 12-2 at daycare.

@hilsy85: We're CIO veterans. We sleep trained for falling asleep at four months. For many months LO would wake at 4am every morning but with CIO we got her to sleep until 5/5:30. CIO just hasn't worked for us after that point.

@Anagram: Thanks sharing your experience. DH thinks I'm crazy because I keep wanting to put her to bed earlier since it works for all the other babies. I know every baby is different I'm just trying to latch on to something in desperation. We tried putting her to bed at 7:15 tonight. Maybe we can at least get back to where we were.

Have you done any sort of sleep training previously? I would treat that wakeup as a MOTN waking..I certainly wouldn't be getting LO out of bed at that time! For us, that would mean probably doing CIO with checks.

@Corduroy: I have an 11 month old, so she's younger but I kept moving her bedtime earlier and earlier, in an attempt to get her to sleep longer and it didn't work for us, either.

When she was 6 months, she was sleeping 8 pm-6:30 or so. I slowwwwly moved her bedtime to 7:30 and then 7:00 pm. She started waking at 6. I moved her bedtime to 6:30 and then 6 pm, and she started waking up at 5 am. In a last-ditch effort, for a week I put her down at 5:30 pm (but still, it would usually take her till almost 6 to actually sleep) and she woke at 4:30!.

F that. Some of these sleep axioms don't work on all babies. Now I've stretched her bed time back to 6:45 pm and she wakes up at 6 on the dot every day.

Starting sleeping better at night when we moved back bedtime. She falls asleep 730-745. Gets up 630-715. This only has worked since she naps now at 1215-200 at day care. How are the naps?

@loveisstrange: Yes, she freaks out. I could count on one hand the number of naps and mornings she's woken up without screaming. I would love for her to wake up at 6:30.

Does she freak out in the morning when she gets up? What time would you prefer her to wake up?

I've been reading a lot about ways to get LO to sleep longer in the morning. It seems like most people say that (counter intuitively) if you put your baby to bed earlier they will sleep longer. I've been trying for a week. She goes down fine but she keeps getting up earlier and earlier. I'm not sure where to go from here. Do I keep trying an earlier bedtime for a longer period of time? Try to keep her up later? LO is 16 months.

Before I tried to improve things I nursed her right before bed at 7:30 and she woke between 4:30 and 5:30. Now I've moved up the bedtime feed to 6:15 and bed by about 6:45. She's waking between 3:45 and 4:30 (3am this morning but she fell back asleep). I know she's still tired because she'll sleep on my shoulder for a few minutes when I pick her up. Then she'll sleep as long as I walk around (10 minutes max, she is heavy). I'm exhausted and open to any tips.
