I gained a lot pretty fast, too...mainly because snacking is what kept morning sickness at bay! I havent gained any weight since 32 weeks (im 36 weeks now) so right now im at about 38 pounds gained.

I was really upset about how much i put on, especially since i only wanted to gain about 25 pounds (and because i worked out and wasnt eating a bunch of junk food or empty calories) but my doctor assured me that our bodies know what to do and that i should not stress about the numbers on the scale. She also said that what our bodies do during pregnancy is largely genetic (and this put me at ease, since my mom gained 40 pounds with me and was in a bikini less than 3 months after she had me!)

I gained 11 lbs my first trimester and another 11 in my second trimester. The midwife told me at my 20 week appointment (17 lbs) that I was gaining a little fast. For me, they key was sugar and juice, which was of course what I was craving most. When I ate sugary food, I always gained weight at my next appointment. It was hard to hold off, but I always felt better if I didn't have any. If I had like one cookie, I wanted a million. I ended up gaining 37 pounds and I lost all but 10 within a few weeks.

@CVBee: Your first trimester souunds a lot like mine. I was constantly nauseated (and ate small frequent meals to deal with that), and I was so exhausted I felt like a zombie.

I was on the thin side (5'7" and 140 punds, although I generally weigh between 130 and 135), but I wasn't scrawny. I was carrying a few extra pounds from trying to get pg, and holidays and weddings.

My mom told me she gained about 40 pounds with each pregnancy, and I expected to do about the same even though we are physically very different (for starters, she is a good 4 inches shorter than I am). But I guess I just wasn't ready to see the numbers I saw. I have never weighed this much. It hit me a lot harder than I expected.

@mediagirl: i know, i actually made a chart, it's sort of 0lbs 1st tri, .6lbs-.8lbs/week 2nd tri, and .8-1.2lbs/week 3rd tri. BUT they tell you 1lb/week 2nd tri and 1-2lbs/week 3rd tri. Terrible medical math!
@Ree723: I was on the skinnier said and the books agree with you, but my clinic said no such thing--very frustrating. BUT I'm pretty sure my clinic's care is gearing toward 18-20 year old military wives who might just try to eat everything in sight and get sick--and lots of 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc time moms who don't listen to the advice because they don't need it :P
@cvbee: agreed. generally your body knows what it needs better than your "logic" does. :)

@MsLipGloss: I gained 12 pounds in first trimester, but then when I got over how I felt during first trimester, I made some serious changes to slow down that weight gain. First trimester I felt sick if I didn't eat every 2 hours and I was way too tired to even walk the dog. As soon as I felt better I went back to eating normally and would do a minimum of 30 minute power walk per day and things went totally back to normal and I stopped with the weight gain.
I think generally a body will do what a body wants to do for the baby.

I gained a lot between weeks 14 and 24. I lost 2 lbs in the first tri for some reason (no MS, just not hungry I guess) but then packed on 20 lbs to be +18 by week 24 of pregnancy. It didn't really correlate with my eating/exercise habits so I just figured that it was my body doing what it was going to do.

I'm 30 weeks tomorrow and my weight gain has been pretty stable for the past 5 weeks. I gained just under 2 lbs from week 24 to week 28 and have now lost those 2 again, so I'm still sitting at an 18 lbs weight gain overall.

I think the moral of the story is that the weight gain comes and goes in spurts. A few weeks ago I was worried that I was going to end up gaining 50 lbs this pregnancy, but now that I'm holding steady at 18 lbs, I'm feeling better about it, although I know I will probably put on a fair bit of weight now in the third tri. Whatever happens, happens.

As Mrs DD pointed out above, if you're skinny, you're more likely to gain more weight. I'm on the skinnier side and was told to expect to gain at the higher end of the average recommendation (25 - 35 lbs) as my body would need to put on more fat than it would if I was a bit heavier when I got pregnant. We'll see how this plays out for the remaining ten weeks!

Anyway, don't stress too much about it - your baby was probably going through a growth spurt which resulted in you gaining more than you would like but I wouldn't be surprised if it slows down a bit for a while before picking up again. Also, you can't discount the weight of your boobs! I'm convinced that 3/4s of my initial weight gain was due to my chest as well....and I'm only half tongue in cheek when I say that! :-)

Were you thin before getting PG? My girlfriend is very, very thin, and doctor told her that she might gain 45 pounds or more and it was OKAY!
If you are eating right and working out, there is literally nothing you can do. You can' try to diet or lose weight when your pregnant. It's just what your body needs to do in order to grow a healthy baby. I wouldn't worry about it too much!

I started worrying about weight gain a lot, so I just stopped looking when they weighed me at the doctor's office. I am on bed rest so there is nothing I can do about it... I just don't want to know anymore!

Isn't it funny? 1lb/week is good but we're only supposed to gain 25-35lbs. How does that work? :-) If your OB says you're doing okay, go with it. Just try to eat healthier choices and don't indulge too much on the sweets. I was at 20lbs at 20 weeks then gained 8lbs in two weeks and my weight was mentioned to me. Since then, I have only gained 2lbs. You'll fluctuate. I wouldn't worry about it.

Me too, and I ate well, and I'm miserable with my weight gain.
Gained 20 pounds by 20 weeks. Now I'm at 34 pounds at 34 weeks--and I'm only 5'0, so I feel like a blimp whale.

Nothing I can really do about it.

And my OB clinic said they only wanted me to gain 25 pounds (not 25-35). Well---guess the only thing I can do is deal with it after baby arrives. It's been one of the most stressful parts of pregnancy for me.

@MsLipGloss: I was up around 20lbs at 20 weeks too! I ended up gaining 50-55lbs total. I wouldn't worry too much about the weight gain as long as you're eating healthy and exercising.. BUT! I will say, it's a serious pain in the butt losing all of the weight post baby!
The first 30 lbs came off within 6 weeks and I didn't even try.
I'm about 10lbs from my pre-baby weight and it ain't coming off! I'm still nursing around the clock at 12 months pp, but tired if using that as my excuse :P

@BetsyBoop: Yes! I had aversions to all things protein in my first trimester, and am slowly incorporating protein (significant amounts) back into my diet. Maybe I should put some more giddy up into the protein pony and start curbing more carbs!

I feel your pain...I think I gained 12 lbs in my first trimester, and I was exercising 6 times a week! I'm in my 36th wk and am up a bit over 30 lbs now...the weight gain definitely slowed down during the 2nd trimester but accelerated during the 3rd.

My OB said that the key to keeping weight gain at bay is limiting carbs to 150-200g per day, and I found that to be true. The reason why I've been gaining weight in the 3rd trimester is because some of my food aversions have returned, and carbs seem to be the only thing that doesn't make me queasy. Do you consume a lot of carbs?

I gained a lot early too. But I wasnt exercising or eating right. Towards the end I had a much better weight gaining pace because I changed my eating habbits. So I don't have any great advice for you, since you already seem to be doing everything right. And I can also relate to the boobs thing, I had so many dresses that fit nicely over the belly but not the boobs. Annoying!

So . . . yeah . . . as of today, at 19 weeks, I have gained a s-o-l-i-d 20 pounds. Twenty. Too-when-tea. 10 + 10 = OMG20. While I fully anticipated gaining weight, I didn't expect to gain this much this soon. The gain has been steady, no more than 1 pound per week, but, still. Seriously? Eating right, light workouts, the whole nine yards, and here I sit at a 20 pound gain.

Is there anyone else that has been through this? I have heard rumors of women gaining early in their first and second trimesters and then slowing down during the second half of the second trimester/third trimester, but I am looking for verifiable proof! Not someone's aunt's third-cousin twice removed's brother-in-law's veterinarian's dog whisperer, but yanno, maybe someone a few degrees closer?

Despite all the humor, I had to stop myself mid-fuh-ZOMG-reak-out at my neuro appointment today . . . so that I could freak out in the privacy of my own home. To top it all off, the dress I bought 6 days ago (for a black-tie optional function this Saturday) will.not.close.over.my.boobs. (the girls are like *taa daa!* up a whole cup size overnight.) Like, not even close. *oy* and * le sigh*
