While you never know, I think that early December in Boston usually isn't that bad-- yeah it's cold, but not frigid, and *usually* the snow doesn't really start until around Christmas, though of course, it's unpredictable for sure. I actually don't know all the fun things to do with a LO in the winter yet (LO is due in July) so I'll be keeping an eye to see what others suggest! But for weather, I think it wouldn't be all that risky at the point, just that it also wouldn't be warm for outdoor activities or anything.

Early December in Chicago is unpredictable. My LO was born 12/1 last year, and I brought her home in 67 degree weather! It's usually much colder than that, but I'm with @ChitownRo - it's fabulous around Christmastime! Her suggestions are great! I'd add the Christkindlmarkt, an outdoor Christmas festival and market in front of City Hall, and ice skating either in front of "the bean" or on Wrigley Field.

@mediagirl: OOH! You KNOW my vote is for Boston ;) But I cannot in good conscience say it's good for young kids in early December. The snow and cold here can be quite brutal. But because of that, there's lots of fun indoor things to do!

@ChitownRo: agree! I might be biased, but Christmas time in Chicago is the best!

I love Chicago at Christmas time. For kids, there is the Lincoln Park zoo light event, which is free. Macy's (old Marshall Fields bldg) in the loop has a huge tree and window display. Many people w kids like to have lunch in the Walnut Room there. Plus Mich Ave has lights/decorations galore. There are tons of kid friendly museums around here too. As long as you are appropriately bundled, the weather shouldn't get in your way

Early December is not always that cold in Boston either. Winter seems to be getting later and later. There's plenty to do here with a toddler, but I'm sure that goes for Chicago as well.

@mediagirl: It's really not that cold in early December:) I am referring to Chicago. We go there maybe 6x a year because it is a 4h drive from us. It gets cold in Jan and gets CRAZY cold in Feb. Earl December (1st-maybe 18th) really isn't bad!

I think both cities offer plenty of indoor activities so I wouldn't worry so much about finding things to do once you get to your destination (as a native of Massachusetts, Boson gets my vote!). However, I would warn you to consider the chances of weather affecting your travel plans. If you are just going for a weekend a delayed flight due to a snowstorm could pretty much ruin the whole trip : (

I vote Boston for obvious reasons! :)
I can think of at least 1 thing M can do...playdate with P!

But really, my cousin and her DH came up from Raleigh last December and had a great time. I went up and walked around with them and it was beautiful out. Cool, but not frigid cold. Plus, New England near Christmas is amazing, IMO.

Bruins?
haha ;) that's what we do

I'm sure your 18 month old would love the aquarium and children's museum.
ETA I just checked and they do have Fenway tours in December - and they include holiday lights! That's pretty cool.

My husband is turning 40 this year. I would like to do something nice for him for his birthday. I was thinking of taking him to Boston or Chicago. He loves Boston and he has said he has always wanted to visit Chicago.

I know it's going to be cold and unfortunately winter means no Red Sox game in Boston. Is it just a bad idea to plan to visit one of these cities in December as a tourist?

Ideas of what to do in either city in the winter with an 18 month old?
