I'm glad I found this thread! Ds is almost 18 months and they want to start potty training at daycare. I hadn't even thought about it yet, but after observing him the past week I do notice signs of being ready. Just this morning he called for me from the crib to tell me he'd pooped (he has his own word). Too bad it was only 6am! and the experiences here give me hope that it can be done even at his age!

We did it after he turned 2 years old with the help of our daycare. By then, he was ready. He started to show potty cues around his 2nd birthday where we could see him thinking about it and even going to his hiding spot to poop in his diaper. We didn't push it then. By 2 years old with constant potty breaks, he caught on quick. We still have occasional accidents about 5 months later.

It's totally doable! We started putting LO on the potty as soon as he could sit, and would act all excited about it - "yay! pee pee!" lol. He got it pretty quickly, though it was months before he was ready to potty train for real.

@daniellemybelle: From other mamas I've talked with, it seems like the potty ring that fits on the regular toilet is more successful. It's definitely more annoying to use though. ha!

@birdofafeather: Well, I'm using the term lightly. :silly: She's still wearing pull-ups to bed. Not ready to pull that trigger yet. She's day trained though!

@photojane: Done?! Way to go!! I guess I should say R is potty trained now since she's only in diapers for naps and night time but she still has an accident every day or so (usually our fault for not taking her before we get in the car) so I haven't called it yet! Ha.

We introduced the seat around a year and around 18 months, she might go on it before her bath. We read books, etc. I had grand plans to train earlier but traveling made me not pull the trigger. Around 22 months, she went on her own twice in a row when we were home so we started from there. A couple set backs due to accidents/ laziness and holidays, but we got back on track at 23 months and she's been pretty good by 24 months here.

@photojane: That's interesting! I was thinking of getting LO (almost 15 months) a potty to "get used to" because she seems very interested in my bathroom habits. I never thought about it being a toy and confusing her.

We started a relaxed version of EC at 3 months. We put her on the toilet with a Bumbo potty seat and she'd poop or pee if she needed to go. At 15 months we decided to go all in and we used the 3 day potty training method to fully train her. She's 19 months now and has been fully trained since then. We still put a diaper on her at night, but she hasn't wet her self a night in at least a month. I love that we started on a real toilet so early because she's always been comfortable on it. When she was tiny she didn't know enough to be scared of it and by the time she was older she was used it and it was no big deal.

We tried this, but unfortunately, it wasn't as successful as we had hoped. We aren't forcing it, but he won't go on the potty at all anymore and he's 27 months. I'm hoping he'll start to come around again, but he just has zero interest right now.

We bought a little potty around 12 months and let him start exploring. He follows me to the bathroom and we talk about whats going on, and he always wants to help flush :) DH always has him sit on the potty before bath time, and when he pees in the bath tub he talks to him about the fact that he is peeing. A week ago he put LO on the potty and asked him if he could put his pee in the potty...and he did! He did it the next morning, that night, and then a couple more nights this week. We aren't pressuring him and if he doesn't want to sit there we don't make him. We have a new baby coming in a couple weeks so we aren't ready to "potty train" but its fun to see him interested! I was floored that he just peed in the potty like it was nothing! LO is 22 months.

I'm not sure if this is early, but we introduced a potty around 18 months. She loved sitting on it. She would go into the bathroom while I was going, and sit next to me. Introducing it before we actually potty trained backfired for us. When we started PTing she thought the little potty was just a fun chair/toy. She only peed on it once, and it wasn't on purpose. She's potty trained now at 23 months, but still won't use the little potty seat. She only goes on the big potty. I thought I was doing a great thing by introducing the potty early, and getting her "used" to it, but it actually just confused her.

I'm interested in this as well. DD is 14 months and we have just started having her sit on the potty before bathtime. She randomly peed in it once. We are mostly just trying to get her comfortable with it, but it would be great if she picked it up with baby #2 due in a few months!

@littlejoy: We have a potty in his room, although I recently moved it when he went through a bout of dehydration and I didn't want him to feel like I was pressuring him to pee. We started using it around 5 months when we noticed that every time we took off his diaper he'd pee buckets. It's hilarious when he sits and farts and laughs at himself.

ETA: Not hilarious was the time I angled his parts wrong and his pee stream hit the shield wrong and he ended up peeing on a piece of artwork we had sitting against the wall.

@littlejoy: haha yea! I haven't been too pushy with sitting on it. We have a very little potty, but my dude has short legs (thanks to his mama) and he doesn't have the greatest balance when trying to sit on it and refuses my help. I'm kinda waiting for a growth spurt. haha

@.twist.: We usually sit her on her potty after naps (since that's a common time to go), and let her "read". She likes it.

I know our biggest hurdle will be pooping. She ALWAYS poops while she's sleeping. That'll be awkward if she's still doing that at 5. ;)

We haven't done any active training but we have a potty in the bathroom and let him sit on it if he likes. I just recently found out that he sits on a potty at daycare (!) so maybe I could take it a bit more seriously? LO is 18 months.

Interested in this thread.

Anyone introduce a potty pretty early? We've had a potty in LO's room for about 6 months now (she's 12 months). We have been pretty relaxed about it, and will sit her on it after naps (when we think about it). Now that's a year old, I'd like to stay relaxed about it, but like the idea of getting her more comfortable with it. I have a feeling that around 18-20 months, we'll care a bit more.

Anyone have success with early potty training (again, I don't have many expectations here)? I'm looking at it from an EC standpoint (getting her comfortable, watching for cues, using cues on my end for letting go).

I'd love any tips or advice!
