" I think it's mind games, you hate waking at 6 so they wake at five for a while and then you suddenly think 6 is wonderful. Tricksy babies. " @mrssuperhero omg sooo true. LO (5 months) has been getting so much better at naps and slowly but surely he is waking earlier and earlier. We used to whine about before 7... then settled on 6/6:30... and now lately he's woken at 5, whined and fallen back asleep until 5:30 and then been happy and ready for the day.. AGH! He doesn't want to nurse until 7 (eats one time overnight) so.. I guess he is just excited to see us? Oy.

Yuck. That is early. LO goes to bed @ 9 for this exact reason. She still likes to wake up at 6:30.

My daughter went through a phase like that around 14 months. It totally killed me. She did get over it to a degree - now she usually sleeps until 6. She only sleeps for 11 total hours a day, too. I hear you.

What time is Sunny's nap? My only suggestion would be to push the nap closer to 1 which would help push bedtime a little later and maybe get a longer nap. Does she seem well rested on the amount of sleep she's getting? Some kids are big nappers, some sleep tons overnight, some are both (damn them!) and some are neither (:().

We dealt with a lot of wakeups around 6am before we went to 1 nap and it got better after we transitioned. I loooove early bedtimes though so I'd rather deal with slightly early wakeups than a later bedtime.

@T.H.O.U.: yeah, limiting naps has never worked for my kids, it just makes them crankier!

@Mrs. Superhero: Thanks for this thread but unfortunately even though we transition to one nap around the same age, we still have a 5 am riser at 20 months. She goes to bed between 7-8pm and just can't seem to sleep longer than that. She naps for 2-2.5 hrs during the day. The only other thing I can think is to limit her naps but she already is cranky if she gets less then 2 hours.

My oldest (who is now 11) honestly is up every morning before 6:00 for her entire life. As a toddler it was even earlier. It didn't matter if she stayed up late, how well she napped/didn't nap. Nothing would keep that girl asleep. It was so nice once she got older that she would sit and look at her books quietly for a little while before getting up for the day. Now it is great because she gets up and gets ready for school on her own without me having to argue with her to get up!

olive's room is pretty much pitch black, and charlie's is too. that's always helped them sleep in. super loud white noise too. sometimes you can just try everything and nothing works.... until they grow out of it on their own. :(

@Mrs. Superhero: LOL, i was just thinking that this morning! Before DH and i would die waking up at 6:30 am, but after 2 weeks of 5am wakeups, 6am is eaaaaasy.

Okay, not that easy, but it's what i am telling myself.

Lately she'll wake up at 5:30 and cry on and off for about an hour. Since she's still lying down, i don't bother getting her.

@Mrs. Superhero: Unfortunately, I think some babies just need less sleep. My son (11.5 months) only gets 10 (mabye 10.5) overnight and takes 2.5 hours of naps during the day (sometimes 2, sometimes 3). So, his average sleep is 12.5 hours and it's on the low end of average. I always am so jealous when I see people posting about their babies waking too early....at 6:30! I would die for 7:30-6;30 straight through!

@winniebee: I've tried both ways, I don't get her right away very often though because I struggle to wake up fully at that point. Early morning sleep is the best sleep. She used to fall back asleep if she woke before 5:30, but not since she finally started STTN.

@Mrs. Superhero: How long have you been leaving her in her crib for? I do tend to respond pretty quickly in the morning because on occasion if he is fed, he'll go back to sleep for another 45 mins. Plus, I have to get up for work anyways. Once he's down to one nap, I'm going to really try to push him to sleep in though.

@Mrs. Bee: She's been on one nap for about 4 months now. Her overall sleep has improved dramatically in the past few months as she does fall asleep easy, sleep straight through and then nap consistently.

She's just not sleeping a ton and I'm still tired everyday which is a drag. Mr SH gets up with her a lot of mornings, but I still am up for an hour before I go back to sleep, which is not working this week as I can't seem to fall asleep again!

@winniebee: I do just leave her in her crib. She generally whines for an hour. I'm trying to avoid nursing before 6 so she doesn't just wake up because she's used to eating. This strategy is not doing much however!

charlie was an early riser usually waking up around 5:30 at that age. but he did outgrow it definitely before olive was born (i have to go back and look). and now he usually wakes up at 7 - 7:30. he's even gone through phases where he woke up at 8:30.

ah yes i remember now. he started waking up later when he dropped to one nap. then he took a 3-4 hour nap and slept 12 hours at night. how long has she been on one nap?

@Mrs. Superhero: No ideas, just sympathy. My son sleeps 10 hours at night - 7:30 - 5:30. He used to go down at 7, but we pushed bedtime to 7:30 because 5 am wakeup is just no bueno (and we can't get everything done after work to get him to bed by 7). What happens if you just leave her in her crib?

Ugh, Sunny has always been an early riser but this month she is waking up at 5 and it is killing me. She's 15 months old and sleeps from 7-5 at night and then 1.5 hours for nap. So 11.5 total, which is 2 hours less than the average for her age.

I would kill for those extra two hours!

It's especially nasty as Ria often doesn't fall asleep until 9:30-10. You do the math, that's not enough hours for me to sleep!

Anyone have any advice? Helpful stories of children outgrowing this? Just want to whine with me?
