@blackbird: Success! I made the vegetable tian for my mom and husband as a trial run and they said it's a keeper. I took some shortcuts like using dried thyme leaves and ground thyme, so the fresh thyme for Thanksgiving will be even more delish. In the trial run I used parmesean and asiago cheese because I already had that on hand, but plan to use gouda for Thanksgiving for a cremier melt on top. The last modification is to add eggplant to the potato, squash, and zucchini. Besides all the chopping the Tian was really easy to make.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: First: I want to eat at your house!! mmmm

Second: you were asking about a squash casserole and this one is a fave from my family that DH's family makes all the time now too. We have this like 1x week all through the fall and winter. LOVE IT!! http://allrecipes.com/recipe/amazing-butternut-squash/

@mrs. lemon-lime, I have absolutely no idea what brand it is! I do have a really nice balsamic vinegar that I could reduce if i felt so inclined...but i got that from a local shop.

@JerricaBenton: Sure take them! From personal experience the cubed green apples are a hit. I served the pieces with the skin on for color contrast.

My realtor's wife used horseradish with hers. Her tip was to make the horseradish extra cold/freezing and scoop a smidge onto the top of the soup. The cold of the horseradish would cool the piping hot soup as it melted.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Nope! I sometimes make it in my wok and sometimes in a regular sauté pan or even "frying" pan. I've even used a pot in a pinch!

Just garlic, soy sauce and a bit of white sugar. That's it! You can cook it to whatever doneness you want. So easy peasy.

I don't have anything to add to your menu - sounds yum! I do like the idea of the soup, though! I think it would be fun to serve it in glasses like an amuse bouche, so guests can enjoy it wherever they are without a spoon! I love your garnish ideas, too. I might steal it!

@blackbird: That recipe calls for cheese, always a good sign! My dad is very proud of his garden, I'm sure he's going to bring some of his harvest. Which brand of balsamic glaze do you use?

@regberadaisy: I like crunchy, al dente beans. Will I need any special equipment to make that? My stovetop cookware is non-stick and I have a cast iron skillet for cornbread & frittatas that I use solely for the oven because of the smooth stovetop surface..

It is never too early to talk about turkey. Once then weather turns I demand a turkey meal. :P

I always make stir fry green beans!

The patio sounds nice! You can get some warmers, too, so the food stays warm.

I brought this to our last big family function (Christmas maybe?) http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/vegetable-tian-recipe/index.html and it was really good. You could do a second tray with different vegetables if you want...we even had some people who'd never had squash or baked tomatoes look at it funny, then decide it was delicious. I drizzled a thick balsamic glaze over the top before it was served. and i layered mine standing up so it was pretty

@Smurfette: Squash casserole peaked my interest, what's the texture like?

DH doesn't want too many people in our house scuffing up our new floors, so I may talk him into letting me rent a long table & chairs so we can dine altogether on the patio. (FL- has mild weather). But, I agree the soup may be overkill.

We always have
Corn Casserole
Green Bean Casserole
Broccoli
Squash Casserole

can you tell we like casseroles?

Also don't forget the mashed potatoes!!!

Also, I don't think you need the soup. With all that other food, especially is there isn't a table and chair for everyone to eat at.

I know its a bit early, but I am an uber planner and need a crowd pleasing side dish (that I have enough time to perfect).

Here's what I am serving for Thanksgiving:
Turkey
Cranberry-citrus relish
Giblet Gravy
Ham
Cornbread w/ sage sausage dressing (stuffing)
Baked mac & cheese
Slow cooked collards & kale w/ tangy relish

To start (optional)
Butternut squash bisque with either horseradish garnish or green apples

I may or may not serve soup in part because everyone will eat around the house and it just seems like a lot of moving. But, I could serve it like an amuse buche before dinner is served/ table is blessed.

Veggie side dishes of the past that have worked for some, but not all or was too similiar to another served dish:
Brussel Sprouts w/ bacon
String beans (prepared like greens)
Roasted carrots, squash, red onion, zuchinni platter
Candied yams (my mom makes pie)

I am not making any of the desserts, since my mom, MIL, and aunt are each bringing something. Sweet potato pie, Sour cream pound cake, and whatever MIL makes.

What side veggie should I add?? Links to your fav recipe would be much appreciated.
