We transitioned crib to floor mat at 16 months. She was trying to climb out and my son was due. It was a dream transition! She loved her new big kid bed and big kid room! Only thing was we had just remodeled the room so at first we put absolutely nothing in it except her floor mat, so she had no distractions. (There were wall hangings and stuff but no books, toys, or furniture to climb.

@Punky: Ah I see, that makes sense. Good luck! I'm sure it'll go fine. :)

We put my daughter in a floor bed at 8 months. If she woke up, she just cried for us. We totally avoided all the struggling with a toddler bed that other people seem to have - I'd recommend it to anyone.

I'm a little worried about this with my 15mo DS. He's a huge climber, and a couple of times recently I've caught him trying to climb in to his cot. He does sleep in a sleep sack and I feel like it would be almost impossible to climb out in that, but I worry he could hurt himself trying. I'm not ready to transition though!

@oliviaoblivia: That's funny. She loves the pillows on the floor, I could totally picture finding her sleeping on them one morning.
@edelweiss: that's kind of my thought. She just needs to make it two more months before summer.
@Greentea: We've already taken out the changing table, glider and ottoman. All that's left is her dresser, which I may move in the closet, and a little bench/bookcase and a toy chest, So she's pretty safe in there.
@mauxie: Glad to hear the transition went well. I thought about a sleep sack but I'm more afraid of her tripping in it and faceplanting into the side of the crib.

We transitioned from crib to floor mattress at ~16 months. She wasn't climbing or anything but I needed the crib for my son. It went fine! She generally stays in bed until someone greets her (still does at 2.5, unless she has to pee)... Even though she has access to toys/books, she stays put. I think it also help that she doesn't have a night light so when it's dark she knows she needs to stay in bed haha.

I think I will actually transition my son "early" to a twin mattress or converted toddler bed too.. before he learns he can climb out of the crib.

If you want to keep her in the crib, have you considered putting her in a sleep sack? Maybe that will deter her from climbing a bit?

Yup, we did at 14 months. Twin mattress on the floor and no other furniture (to get hurt on). We used munchkin door gates. She loves it!

i think if she's content right now and you've made the area safe, no need to rock the boat!

DD transitioned herself at 19 months. Found her in the daybed in her room one night after putting her in the crib. The transition was way easier than I expected!

@2littlepumpkins: That's good to hear. So far she seems content in her crib but who knows how long that will last. I really want to wait to try and transition her over my summer break in case it affects her sleep.

I don't have experience with that but I just wanted to chime in that my daughter is also a climber but only just started climbing out of the crib at 2.5! It's weird because she climbs everything else.

Anyone transition their toddler early from their crib to a toddler bed? My daughter is almost 15 months and quite the natural climber (she has climbed up her changing table, high chair, dining table, etc) so I'm thinking it's only a matter of days/weeks before she launches herself out of her crib. She has not made any attempts to climb out of her crib so far (knock on wood) and is usually quite content in there. I also try to run and grab her the second I hear her so she doesn't even think about climbing out. At the moment I've moved anything away from the crib and pretty much built a pillow fortress so she'll land on something soft at least. I worry about transitioning her this early because I'm not quite sure she'd understand that she needs to actually stay in bed instead of running around her room playing and I don't trust her to wander even in her room alone, she seems to find danger wherever she can. So thoughts? Success stories?
