@Modern Daisy: yes for us, afternoon outside time definitely seems to help some. But the hard part is, the early wake up days are the days I'm just beat by the afternoon and want nothing to do with going out. But I usually force myself to since I'd rather deal with it then than at 4:30 am.

We've been dealing with 4:30am wake ups off and on for about 8 months. It totally sucks. I know it has nothing to do with sunrise because he was doing it in December when the sun didn't rise until 8am, so blackout shades won't help. And he has an early bedtime 6:30/7pm, but when we push it back he still wakes at 4:30. The only thing that sort of seemed to help was limiting his daytime nap, but he is in daycare so we have no control over that during the week. But it doesn't even work consistently. I notice that he tends to sleep a little later when he's had a more active day, we go to the beach most weekends and it's a clear difference when the weather is nice and he can be more active outside vs. when it rains all day and we are house bound. For example this past weekend was 90 and sunny and he slept in till 6:40/7 both mornings but the last time we were there it was chilly and rainy and he woke up at 4:39/5am. Nothing else was different!

@JennyG: things are getting a little better. I put her down for a nap at 1 instead of 1:30, so she is usually up by 3. And we started letting her sleep in the big bed in her room at night instead of the crib. She's been sleeping past six most mornings which is a huge improvement. She has woken up a couple of times during the night- last night she said she fell out of bed- but she goes back to sleep.

Down side is bedtime takes a lot longer. She is just so tempted to roll around and play and get out of the bed. So it ends up taking like an hour for her to fall asleep. It's been getting better, slowly, and she's not crying. So still a work in progress but it's been a week since we had a 4:30 wake up.

@Foodnerd81: I just came on to basically write the EXACT post you wrote. (down to the queen bed, pregnant, and blackout curtains). These 4:30 wake ups are killing me. Has it gotten any better? Any great tips you can share?

@Pirouette: ha- I actually had the illogical thought that maybe I could convince her to fake nurse just to south her back to sleep. I quickly dismissed the idea (as well as the idea of giving her milk even though she's clearly not hungry) but in the middle of the night anything sounds good.

@Foodnerd81: oh that is too cute! I feel like whenever lo has a phase of early waking, it is during some crazy development period or teething. The difference being when it's developmental she wakes to practice, and when it's teething she wakes up crying. Of course right after i tell you this period is developmental for her, she woke up hysterical this morning out of nowhere! Dh said her tummy hurt, who knows though. Troubleshooting is rough.

I'm sorry she had such a bad night. I've noticed that ever since i weaned, i have a hard time getting back to sleep after being woken. My nursing superpowers are gone! I'm sure pregnancy doesnt help :(

@Trailmix: thanks. This sucks. She did go to sleep in not too long (in bed with Dh) but by then I was so worked up that it took me a long time to settle. Ugh. And we are traveling this weekend so of course it will be worse than usual. Oh well.

Ugh, that sucks!! We had a MOTN wake up too, which is very rare except for the last few days. I honestly feel it's a phase and I'm just going to keep keeping on in the hopes that things resolve themselves on their own. And for the nap thing, it always takes mine about a week to adjust to any new sleep schedule so I'd keep doing it for a week or so and see where you're at. Sorry you had a rough night!

Well she went o bed fine around 8. Woke up and started whining but not crying at 1:30. Stood and whined for a good 45 minutes before finally crying. Have her some Advil, tried to get her to lay down so I could sing to her. She refused and got mad I wouldn't bring her into to the bed. I finally lost my cool, got really mad and cursed, as I'm leaving the room Dh finally is woken up and we get in a big fight about what to do. And now he's in the bed with her anyway. And it's 3 f-ing am. So that's awesome, so far I'm really glad I woke her up early and missed out on that last little bit of nap yesterday afternoon.

@Foodnerd81: he's almost 19 months so very young for it, but has very good receptive language. We did spend a lot of time explaining it and I'm sure he understands. Yesterday morning I saw him on the monitor standing there all quietly, and then as soon as it turned yellow he shouted 'dada!!' (Daddy is currently doing most mornings!) I thought it couldn't hurt, even if he ended up not understanding at first!

@Trailmix: definitely the two year molars are part of it. But why at 4:30-5 a few times a week? I know they are bothering her though, she was chomping on her bib strap after dinner tonight and had been chewing on her fingers. The rest of the teeth are in.

@Charm54: I am going to try that too but it's hard to get back early enough if we go out. And she seems to nap better when I put her down later- but of course, I'd rather deal with it during the day than at 4:30!

@Pirouette: she's been talking for a little while, but lately when I go in after her nap she starts talking immediately about something that happened before nap that day. Yesterday she talked about trying mommy's stuffed pepper, which I had convinced her taste at lunch. Today she started telling me about the episode of Daniel tiger she watched this morning. It's hilarious.

I'm guessing it's part phase and teething, but maybe the shorter nap/ longer awake time before bed will help? We also spent most of the day outside today. I'm trying everything!

Might it be her two-year molars? Sleep has been tough for us the last month or so (turned 2 early June). There's definitely something going on developmentally as well, mine refused to nap the other day, which is unheard of for them!

Ugh, I hate that anytime you make a post about sleep, I'm like "me too!" But we've been dealing with the same thing intermittently the past week. For her though, I'm pretty sure it's developmental, because she just started speaking in sentences and she starts talking the second she stirs (between 5 and 6 lately). Dh said last night she woke him up 3 times because she was talking in her sleep. So I'm guessing that's her problem. And she's waking up happy and ready to play.

That said, I was also wondering about the ok to wake clock. I am not sure how old she'd need to be for it to work.

All I can do is commiserate. I hope your migraines subside!! And that #2 is a pro sleeper  and maybe shortening the nap will help!

Oh my gosh not much advice but I am right there with you, although it is 5am for us. We have recently got him a gro clock which turns to a sunshine when it is time to get up. So far it is no help in getting him to go back to sleep, but he does stay very quiet and waits for the sun before he calls us. I really want him to get that extra bit of sleep, but at least he is understanding that it isn't morning yet. Oh and he is teething too, I am so hoping its that!

@Rockies11: oh my god- 8:30 would be amazing! I'm thrilled when she sleeps past 7. I sah and we rarely have early activities so that would be so great.

@Truth Bombs: I definitely think her teeth are bothering her- I give her Advil when I walk in at 4:30. It's still dark out at that point, plus she has those paper blackout shades behind her blackout curtains, so I really don't think it's the light. And we have a fan and white noise machine so I don't think it's a sound- though her room is next to the building staircase and it's possible someone is thumping down them really loud early in the mornings. But it happens in other places too.

@lawbee11: I'm both sorry to hear and a little glad to hear that it's not just her. This phase sucks. I can feel at least one molar bump and she's been tugging on both ears so I am sure the teeth hurt. When I ask if they do she says yes but I think she's just saying yes to anything.

I think the nap and bedtime sounds normal. Mine did this right around 2 years old, and it was just a horribke phase. After that phase she started to get up really late for the day - like 8:30 am.

I would try limiting nap to 1.5 and pushing bedtime to maybe 8:30, but I think this may just be one of those "phases" that only time will help.
M is also waking early the last week or so, and I think it's a combo of her molars coming through and being summer, it's light out at like 5am.

M hasn't been waking up that early but her sleep has been terrible the past couple of weeks! Every few days I reach back and see if I can feel her molars poking through but nothing yet. She's been grabbing her ears so I'm still thinking it could be teething. Or some sort of regression. Either way it sucks.

I have to limit my 2.5 year-old's nap to 1 hour. Any longer and whatever I let him go over comes off of the morning. And even when nap is only an hour, I max get 10 hours of night sleep. Been this way since 18 months, and I experimented with a lot of things before cutting down on nap.

I would differ and say the nap is probably not an issue. My 2.5 year old usually naps 1.5-2 hours at school, and closer to 3-3.5 hours on the weekend (often 1-4pm). When she takes a late nap she goes to bed later, but still sleeps 11-12 hours at night without an issue. I wonder if her teeth are just hurting her so she can't get back to sleep in the morning because she's uncomfortable and this will pass once the molars pop through. Also, is there anything in her room that could be bothering her? Noises/light, etc that's making her wake up?

@hilsy85: yeah it didn't occur to me until today that the long nap could be affecting wake up time. I thought it would affect how she fell asleep, not how she woke up.

I should also note she's definitely getting her 2 year molars. And she's not hungry when she wakes up, even when she wakes up at 4:30 she's fine waiting until her usual 8 am to eat breakfast.

I would prob start by cutting her nap to no more than 90 min, and if that doesn't help, I would move bedtime back a bit and see what that does. We have gone through many phases of early wake ups (currently in another one, he's only sleeping 9/9:30-6 these days)--it sucks!

Hoping for a little advice or experience here.

C will be 2 in 2 weeks. For a while now she's been fairly consistent with bedtime around 7:30-8, wake up between 6 and 7, nap around 1:30 for about an hour and a half to 2 hours (so wake up between 3 and 3:30). That's been her "normal" but of course not every time.

Lately she's been waking up super early- like 4:30 am. We used to be able to go into her room and lay down in the bed in there with her (she still sleeps in the crib but we have a queen bed in her room) and she would go back to sleep until 7. Not ideal but livable. Now she wakes up at 4:30 and she tries to go back to sleep, but can't, and by 5, she's up for the day.

I'm wondering if she is sometimes taking too long and late of a nap, leading to the early mornings (per this sleep chart:
https://childsleepscience.wordpress.com/2014/02/12/common-age-by-stage-sleep-schedules/ ) Yesterday she slept until4:30 in the afternoon, went to bed about 8, up at 4:30 am.

Any troubleshooting advice or things that worked for you to get your littles Angels to sleep past sunrise? I'm losing it with the early wake ups- I'm pregnant, exhausted, and getting migraines from lack of sleep. I hate to cut short naps but I'd sure rather deal with her at 3:30 pm than 4:30 am.
