@NovBaby1112: So I actually ended up keeping his bedtime the same, or even moving it up a bit--he's now in bed by 7pm, usually around 6:50. He doesn't usually wake up at 7, lol--the past week, I would say 6:15/6:30 is more the norm. He naps at 9 and then at 2, usually for an hour/hour 15 min. I really think that he was just ready, and letting him fuss for a bit those first few days helped. But like I said, I'm sure now that I wrote this all out, he will be back to waking up multiple times a night!

@hilsy85: That is awesome!! I am jealous. R is waking up at 5, 530 if we are lucky, every day since the time change. She doesn't even eat till 615......still tired but she just can't get herself back to sleep.

Just wanted to update--last week, I let LO fuss for about 5 minutes on Tuesday night around 430, and he went back to sleep til 630! And then Wednesday night, I let him cry for about 15 minutes at 5:15 and he went back to sleep until 7! And since then he has STTN at least 11 hours. I AM SO HAPPY. And I am sure that now that I am posting about it, it will end. but thanks to you all for your advice!

We have Motrin bc I think he has a tooth coming in but he was still up like 5 times. Awful awful. I hope you feel better! Also is it totally effed up that I'm thinking if you go home early and your lo is in daycare you get to be home by yourself and maybe sleep and I am jealous?

@hilsy85: No advice here, the only thing that came to my mind was limiting naps as well. My LO is a few weeks behind, as you know, he typically sleeps 6:30-6:30 and then takes one 1.5 nap.

@Sammyfab: I would say on a good day, when he STTN and has good naps, he's sleeping from 7-5:30/6, so 10.5-11 hours, and then 2 1 hour15 min naps. We put him to bed a bit later tonight so we'll see if it helps over the next few days! I also wouldn't mind if as he started to sleep more over night his naps naturally shortened, I just hate to wake him if he needs the sleep.

@kml636: ugh I also dread possibly re traininG! WIll update on how this works out :)

Please let me know if you figure something out. My 12 mo used to sleep 7 - 6, now she's waking at 12 and 5 for bottles. I'm afraid I'm going to have to resleep train her. I hate that! And, I don't want to do it when we have to travel for the holidays.

@hilsy85: ya, believe me, I haaaate waking up my son too!!! But there comes a point where they just max out on sleep and expecting them to sleep more is unrealistic. When he STTN, how many consecutive hours of sleep is he getting? If he's getting anywhere between 13-14 hours of total sleep in a 24hr period (without sleeping in until your desired WU time), then your best bet would be to push bedtime later...especially if you don't want to mess with naps. If you want him to sleep more overnight, then you would have to limit naps.

And like others have mentioned, my son has learned to play / lay quietly in his crib until I get him. Sometimes we are really lazy in the mornings and he can hang out in his crib for over an hour and we have to double-check our video monitor to make sure he's actually awake because he's so quiet. I know you said you've tried it before...I think it's worth a shot to try it again!

@winniebee: ah ok...I guess we might just have to stick it out then, ugh. I guess if I can get him down to STTN and waking at 530, I would take it. It's just the up at 445 and then up again at 6 that sucks!

@hilsy85: yes! He was in daycare at the time and I couldn't really manipulate his naps until then. He was up from nap at daycare at 3 and the latest we could stretch him for a long time was 730. As he got older he could stay up later and the 8 pm bed time became an option. Also he just never slept more than 10 hours overnight for a long log time. Now he sleeps more like 10.75 or 11 and even 12 occasionally. But we also occasionally have the random 5:30/6 waking which seems so early now but after so many months of 5, I will take it!

My son was always an early riser but was a super early riser from 5-13 months. He slept 7-5 from like 5-9 months and then 730-530 until around 13 months when He started sleeping til almost 6. I changed bedtime to 8 and then he started sleeping til 630. Before that when I put him down later even 8, he would still get up at 530. When we switched to one nap he started sleeping 8-7 ish. But rarely naps more than 1.5 hrs. I would always feed him a bottle on first wake until we bottle weaned at 14 months. Sometimes he would fall back asleep for another 45 mins but it was rare.

@hilsy85: Yah, maybe worth a shot? Might be nicer to have him for a little more time in the eve, too? Pushing everything a little later might be tough, but could be worth it? C goes down 7:15/7:30 or so and then usually around 5:40 she starts babbling to herself, she'll either talk happily then fall back asleep or get fussy and we go in to give her the paci. Half her issue is she is now a princess and wants to be laid down with her blanket on top of her again, lol. And then we don't hear from her until 7-8:30am, she makes me late for work some days, but I refuse to wake her!

@hilsy85: I honestly don't know how long it took. I just don't go get her. Ever. Unless theres a problem. She caught on eventually. And I don't feel bad doing it because she wakes up happy and doesn't cry.

I do think a lot of it has to do with her just being a really good sleeper though. Girl loves to sleep. Always has.

My only suggestion based on his bedtime, would be to see if you can push things back half hour to hour? It is so hard I know, but if he had a 7:30 bedtime (still with two naps!) it could help that wake time?

The paci thing is a little nuts, we worked SO hard to get rid of it, and now give it for our own selfish purposes, lol.

@loveisstrange: how long did it take? Because the last time this happened and we tried just leaving him, it went on for like 3 weeks with no change (and then I gave in and started getting him). I guess that was like a month and a half ago, so things could be very different now...and omg 8am wake time!! Like i said above, I am so jealous! My quality of sleep would be so different with an 8am wake up...

Honestly, I "trained" C to sleep later by leaving her in the crib until the time I wanted her awake. (Unless she was REALLY screaming, then we got up).

We still leave her if she wakes up before her "wake" time. She is normally happy to sit and talk until we come get her. She can get out of bed any time after 8am but before 9.

@Beebug: bedtime WAS between 7 and 730, but we thought maybe that was too late, so we moved it up between 630 and 7. He is definitely ready for bed--falls asleep almost no problem at the beginning of the night. I was debating trying the paci again in the MOTN but 1. I don't know if he'd even take it, and 2. I really don't want to get him addicted! I also don't think there's any way he's ready for 1 nap a day--he still really seems to be tired for 2?

@mrbee: I feel like I remember reading posts/blog posts about something like 430 wake ups?!

@Sammyfab: on average, he naps 2x a day, for about 1h15min-1h30min each nap. I hate hate hate waking him, so I would really want to avoid doing that if possible...he is SO CRANKY if I wake him up. I guess I could try waiting to feed him...but I bring him into my bed to nurse in the morning because I get an extra 20 min lying down that way! :)

@edelweiss: it sounds exactly like what L was doing last time we tried it (the fuss and cry for an hour). I'll give it another shot and report back. And we can cry together.

@birdofafeather: omg. Can't even imagine sleeping til 8. doesn't even compute. so jealous!

yeah, if she wakes up before 6:30, i treat it as a night waking and nurse and back to bed she goes. she goes to sleep at 7:30-8 and has always been a 12-hour stretch kinda gal (with her 1-2 MOTN wakings). she has always gone back to sleep so i wouldn't ever get her up at 5 for the day!

i'm sorry about the early wakeups. i know, i mean i KNOW, how painful they are. LO started doing this around 5 months. i was strict about not picking him up until a certain time--this led to months of hearing him fuss/cry for sometimes up to an hour before i would pick him up. i realized that my efforts to "train" him were useless, so in the past few weeks i have surrendered--i now nurse him and put him back to bed. i much prefer this, although i would go ahead and give the "not picking you up until it's wakeup time" method as others have suggested. if it works, great! if it doesn't, you're not alone.

i'm assuming that LO will grow out of this in a few months. if he does not i will cry and cry and cry.

How long are his naps? Perhaps his daytime sleep is affecting his night sleep? I think it's suggested that you limit naps to 1hr each at this age.

I would also try really, really, really hard to pick a 'get out of bed' time and not take him out of his crib until that time. When we dealt with early wakings, we made that time 6 am and gradually added 15-30 minutes. I would also try and hold off feeding until 30 minutes after you get him up. I think it's Ferber that says that babies condition themselves to wake up 30 minutes before their regular feeding time.
