Did anyone see the video of climbers on Everest running for cover?

Completely terrifying!!!

I know someone who lives in Kathmandu -- thank goodness she is safe. I've been following her updates via Facebook and it is just so sad. Not only the loss of life, which is immeasurably tragic, but also the loss of many beautiful temples and cultural icons. She's been doing a great job covering what is happening (we did meet in journalism school, so makes sense :-) ) and shared this Google doc of fundraising campaigns https://docs.google.com/a/virginia.edu/spreadsheets/d/18mYPr4zIl4zzUrKdrfe0hECRrWFumnke-dUWsxucZQw/htmlview?sle=true&usp=gmail

@MrsKoala: Thanks, we did hear from her yesterday via social media. The whole situation is really unnerving though, and frustrating that we need to "dig" for information.

@bluestriped bee: I chose to donate to Oxfam. I'd suggest looking for charities that are either three or four star rated. Charity Navigator is a good source for reputable charities. UNICEF is another that might be good as it aims specifically to help the children affected.

@Baby Boy Mom: Hope your cousin is okay! I work with many Nepalese students and I see exactly what you mentioned. My students are bright, warm, and humorous. It pains me to see them dealing with this.

@Truth Bombs: Yes, I was listening to NPR hoping for more information on how to help and instead, heard a small blurb about how this will effect the Nepalese tourist industry and a lot more on the changes in mammogram policy (still important but not as immediate).

I've been following closely but agree it's surprising, and sad, how little attention is being given. I actually have a cousin there right now, which adds another layer of worry. We spent a month in Nepal several years ago and absolutely loved it. What especially stayed with me was how people make do with so little but are genuinely happy with their lives.

@MrsKoala: @yoursilverlining: I agree. On my drive to work this morning I flipped through a number of radio morning shows and every single one was talking about the Bruce Jenner interview without a single mention of the loss of life from this disaster.

As an engineer, it makes me so sad to know that the reason for all of the death and destruction was because people live and work in sub-standard buildings. The National Musuem of Nepal was recently reinforced and was left standing with little damage.

We have the knowledge, technology, and materials to make places like this exceedingly safer, but we (as a world community) don't have the desire to put the money behind it.

@MrsKoala: Agree - and I think you're right, they don't.

It's just makes me feel so sick to my stomach thinking about both the loss of life, but also that 4 of the 7 World Heritage sites were completely destroyed. Not like a little hurt - like full on rubble. So unbelievably sad to lose such rich history, forever.

It's sad. I feel like no one is even talking about it, which breaks my heart. Feels like most people don't give a crap about the poorer citizens of this planet.

It's absolutely devastating. A man from Nepal spoke at church yesterday about how he was trying to call his family back home and lost connection and how devastating this is.
I'm trying to decide where to donate. I want to know that all my dollars will go there. The news reports say the biggest need is food and water.

The damage and devastation in Nepal after the earthquake on Saturday is horrific. You can find more information about what happened here: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/28/world/asia/nepal-earthquake.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&module=a-lede-package-region®ion=top-news&WT.nav=top-news&_r=0

This is especially sad as Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. Middle income families earn about $200 a month. This will have a huge effect on their economy especially in the tourism sector as several heritage sites were destroyed and the avalanche at Everest may stall the climbing tourism industry for quite a while.

If you'd like to know how you can help, the New York Times has more information here: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/27/world/asia/where-to-donate-for-nepal.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&module=b-lede-package-region®ion=top-news&WT.nav=top-news
