LO is almost two year old and in her life, there have been three instances where the wax buildup was so great that I was able to clean it out with a quick swipe with a baby q-tip. I'm very careful but DH hates it when I do it but he refuses to do it thinking he'll do something wrong. It really grosses me out. In fact, writing all this out sort of makes me want to gag. :S

C tends to have less ear wax build up if we regularly make him lay back in his warm bath to get warm water in his ears rather than just cover his eyes and poor water over his head. It is always a fight since he hates anything touching his ears (we are waiting to see if he will need a third round of ear tubes) but it can be worth the struggle.

@irene: ouch :( Yeah, WJ's wax is very dry too, so it looks like flakes, but at least it comes out in one big ribbon (or several if it breaks while coming out).

Another mom told me that really thick ear wax could be a sign of allergies (seasonal), so I mentioned this to our ped. Is it possible it could be related to allergies, and an anti-allergy medication could thin it out?

At least you can take them out. LO's ear wax is so dry that they are very scattered, and they don't stick together so it is hard to get anything out. Last time we were at the ENT they put him on a microscope and have 3 people pressing him down for the doctor to remove his wax so they can take a look :(

Anyone else's kids have big earwax problems?? Almost every time we go for a checkup, Wagon Jr.'s ears have tons of wax in them. Usually the nurse will do a cleanout if it's blocking his ear, which involves two people holding him down while he screams. :( But the amount they take out is HORRIFYING. I'm talking ribbons and ribbons and ribbons of wax.

These days I keep seeing it in his ears... even sticking out to the point where I could touch it! So over the weekend I actually got him to sit still enough to try and grab the end of it. I was able to pull out a pretty impressive ribbon of wax. I do have a little ear picker of my own, but I'm not daring enough to do it on him, so the rest will have to wait for his next checkup (and the next poor nurse who has to do it).
