@jedeve: I totally understand, you have to pick your battles!

I ordered that nature paper, plus a replacement set of the magnetic poetry ABC 123 magnets and my son's basket is DONE!

All I need to do is figure out something for my 2 year old nephew.

DS is 6.5 months. We got him a noisemaker, bubbles, a kids plate with divided sections (Target $1 bin), a Sandra Boynton board book, a free board book our pediatrician gave us at his check up, a Korean language children's picture Bible and a CD of Korean nursery songs from Grandma, and a Skip Hop rolling floor toy for crawlers (TJ Maxx clearance). Packed with paper grass in a personalized basket and liner (figure he will use it forever).

My MIL is like this. Just email her in advance and say "here's what I've gotten the kids for (insert holiday)! Just wanted to let you know so we don't have doubles of something. Let me know if you want some suggestions or want to know what LOs are really into lately. We will be opening gifts on this day, at this time, so please bring by your gift to open on that day." Control the conversation and make it seem like you are including her in the plans.

For my 18 month old:
Sidewalk chalk
Bubble bath (he hasn't ever had a bubble bath!)
Bunny grahams
A few plastic eggs filled with playdough
Shaker egg (I got this for his stocking but my mom got him another shaker toy, so I saved it and it seems appropriate)
A book? (I think Grandma is getting him one)
Stickers? (If I remember or come across them before Easter)

@looch: probably not. She is just really sweet and sensitive and I think she would just feel really bad. Gifts are her love language. What has worked best in the past is when I make sure to tell her "I'm buying the kids this for Christmas." Or "I'm really excited about buying their baptism outfit." And then she remembers to ask/not buy something. And yeah, I don't love playing defense over gifts, haha, but it's minor enough that it's not worth hurting her feelings over.

@jedeve: My son didn't even notice the doubles in his easter baskets, the basket itself was such a novelty to him.

In the future, would you feel comfortable saying that there's one basket, the grandparents are welcome to contribute something to it, or would that just not go over well? We do this and it works out great!

@honeybear: seeds are a great idea!! We garden so that will be prefect. The kids are 2 and 9 mo so this whole thing is much more about me than them, haha.

I'm planting lettuce this week....I'll have to look into what I could plant around Easter. We will still be over a month from last frost date. I'll get some sunflower seeds though cause LO will like doing that a lot.

I would get him his own tools but he has co -opted my trowels anyway!

Eta: my parents gave us a tree on out first communion and I loved that idea!

@jedeve: How old are your children? Would they understand if you did more experience- type gifts? I think you said somewhere else that you hike with them, so maybe trail snacks or new socks plus a 'gift certificate' for a special hike? I'm putting some seed packets in my son's basket and we'll plant them together. We do a lot of plants as gifts now that we have a yard. It's fun to see them and remember the occasion they commemorate, plus they give us something to do together. My parents still have a pine tree we planted when I was 2 in their yard! I think those types of gestures are the things kids really love, even if in the moment the shiny new stuff from Target seems fun. (I'm going to get a chocolate treat too, but the stuff that will probably seem the least exciting will--I hope!--be the most memorable for him.)

@jedeve: I would just hold back the doubles of stuff. At DS's birthday we got so much stuff that it was pointless to give him everything right away. So I put a lot of it away and when I feel like we need new stuff, I bring something out. You could put away the extra bubbles and chalk and whatever, and when you use up what you bought, then go to the reserves :). Your MIL will probably never have any idea.

Thanks for bumping!

I'm a tad frustrated. My MIL gave me the boys' easter baskets from her yesterday. It has a bunch of the same stuff I had bought for them - chalk, bubbles. I know peoe get pretty heated on here about the "oh it shouldn't matter who buys it." But to me, it does. There are a lot of parts of parenting that are pretty crappy at this age and holidays are one of the fun things - seeing your LO's face when they see their Christmas stocking or picking out their first Halloween costume. So yeah, I'm excited about easter baskets because otherwise it's just MOTN wake ups, tantrums, nap time, meal time and bed time over and over.

I just hate that grandma's presents are bigger and better. They have a lot more money than us so I tend to put thought into what I can do that would bring the most joy for the least amount of money, where as MIL can go into target and drop $100 on whatever she sees, no problem.

DH offered to talk to her but I don't think its worth hurting her feelings over. She does do it innocently. I just need to tell her my plans for every holiday way in advance.

I just wish she would ask. My mom always asks if it's okay she buys the boys something. Or asks what I plan on buying them.

Sorry for the vent...my point is I'm glad to have more ideas!

- 1 stuffed bunny (a new "friend" for her bunny from last year which is her lovey)
- A few pairs of socks (she needed these anyway)
- Melissa and Doug Magnetic Farm Hide & Seek

@looch: I just picked up some of this Nature Print paper that I thought was pretty cool!

You wet it then put objects on it (handprints would be cool) and then set it in the bright hot sun and reviews says it dries in about a minute - anyway you are left with sun prints once you remove the object - fun outside activity!

- chalk
- crayons
- Annie's bunnies
- Clifford Book
- Water table

Most of these things we were going to buy anyway... just convenient to have a holiday in which to "justify" the purchase.

Last year at 6ish months, I think we did:
- One small toy (music set)
- One stuffed bunny (eventually became her lovey)
- One useful item (bib set)

When I was a kid we always got sunglasses and swimsuits in our Easter baskets! We are non- religious but will have baskets for my kids. I already have Easter books that we've been reading (Llama Llama Easter Egg and Duck and Goose Here Comes Easter) that I'll stick in there. Maybe some new spoons, another sippy cup, some puffs? Also they need some socks so I'll stick those in too.

Not sure yet, but growing up, we always got new pjs or a new swimsuit in our basket and then the dyed egg/candy ones were all up for the finding.
