@kiddosc: Ha! My mom would kill me if she knew that I threw them away now. :)

One year, they hid the eggs like normal and we found all but one! We kept telling them that they should make a map of where they hide them. I was in HS at the time so it wasn't like we still believed a bunny hid them. :) It took some time but we finally found that egg in a armoire when it POPPED from going rancid. Oh the smell!

I do leave them out (for weeks!) once hard boiled and dyed but wouldn’t eat them. I toss them at the end of the season. They never smell unless one is cracked.

My honest guess is that since they’re boiled inside a sealed shell they’re probably fine for a long time, but i don’t want to find out!

@erinbaderin: @kiddosc: you only keep farm fresh eggs out on the counter if they haven't been rinsed. if they've been dyed, you definitely want to refrigerate them! once the bloom has been washed off, they will go bad a lot faster!

I buy the cheapest eggs possible to dye, then I put them in the garbage when we are done.

I hid dyed eggs this year for the first time. I did it in the morning while DS was getting dressed so they were outside all of 30 min and then I used them to make deviled eggs. I'm not sure this will work in the future when DS is older though... As for food safety, I've always found eggs a bit weird. Like they're mostly safe raw and get used in all sorts of things that sit out at room temp.

@Mommy Finger: I never really thought much of it until I got married and DH freaked out about the eggs being out forever. My parents still make an egg for each of the kids/grandkids and DH refuses to eat the ones we bring home. I still do

@Bluemasonjar: I read somewhere on the internet that backpackers will take hard boiled eggs on trips because they can last for a few days without going bad... which I'm not sure I believe, but told DH so he wouldn't freak about my parent's eggs.

@erinbaderin: Did you know you can keep farm fresh eggs, raw ones, out on the counter. In most other countries eggs are out on the regular store shelves, but in the US they use a washing process that degrades the shell so they need to be refrigerated.

We never hid the dyed ones, we just dyed them and then put them in the fridge and made egg salad. This is the first year my kids have dyed eggs, at a farm we went to for an egg hunt, and they’re currently in the fridge. They’re raw, but I need to make sure that when I cook them the boys don’t see because while they’ve currently forgotten they exist if they see them they’ll kick up a fuss about eating their art.

My parents always hid the hard boiled eggs and we found them in the morning. We each did one with our name and it was inside our basket which was hidden. No one ever got sick!

I didn't do real eggs this year because I figured DS (2.5) would crack them all because he throws them into his basket.

@kiddosc: Same growing up! My parents hid the eggs at night and then we found them the next morning. We also ate them and I'm horrified by that now! And no, we never got sick but still. We also just color eggs separately and eat them and hide the plastic eggs. But DH has to sneak outside early in the morning to hide the eggs or the squirrels will take them!

We always used the plastic ones for the hunt and baskets, then my dad would eat the dyed ones or my mom would make deviled eggs out of them because none of kids liked hard boiled.

My ILs were the first I knew that actually hid real eggs. We just hide plastic eggs and set the dyed ones out on the table with brunch and then set back in the fridge.

If they were only out 2 hours and indoors (aka not baking in the outside sun) I think that would be safe for me to eat.

What do you do with the eggs you dye for Easter?

As a kid, we got them in our Easter baskets which were hidden somewhere in the house to be found on Easter morning. This means the eggs sat out all night and usually most of the next day. We always ate them and never got sick, but now as an adult that seems awfully unsafe. :silly:

This Easter I set an alarm for early in the morning and added the eggs to the hidden baskets before my kids got up so that they were only out for 2ish hours.

Is it safe to leave hard boiled eggs out for an extended period of time (the internet is conflicted, lol)? What do you do with your dyed eggs?
