@Willow: Our "hot cocoa" is more of chocolate milk that is slightly warm in a plastic mug with marshmallows ;) ha

@Willow: I fully expected the ornaments to look like they were made by children, but they actually look really cool! I would just warn to go easy on the paint. The older kids used a lot and it took days for them to dry! We set them upside down in an egg carton so the excess could drip out, and it still took forever.

And glitter paint is really fun (and not nearly as messy as actual glitter)

Wow, lots of ideas to consider!

@edelweiss: oh rice krispie squares is a great idea!@tinyperson: thanks, yeah I haven't checked out Pinterest yet- sometimes it's a bit overwhelming
@LuLu Mom: if there is snow, we will definitely add sledding/snowman building to the list. I was also thinking of hot cocoa and wondering if young kids would drink it?@MaryM: those are all great craft ideas. I especially like the ornament one- they look great!
@Mrs. Bee: oh that sounds a good idea.

I don't have kids either, but it's usually my job at the holidays to keep the kids occupied while their parents finish up things.

I like the idea of a paper garland for Christmas. Either a glue stick (you could help the 2 year old) or tape would make it easy and less messy.

I've also made pom poms with the kids when they're little. They wrap the yarn around their hand a bunch of times, then I'd tie it off and snip the loops. I had them make flowers for their mom once, but the poms could also be made into ornaments or garland.

Oh! and the best one I did...I bought some inexpensive glass ball ornaments at Michaels and some acrylic paint. You drop a drop of a few different colors and roll the ball around to swirl them. They make super pretty ornaments! With younger kids I had them pick the colors and I put the paint in for them. (like this http://happyhooligans.ca/pour-painted-christmas-ornaments/)

I plan on decorating sugar cookies with DD, go look at Christmas lights around town, sledding/build a snowman, we are religious, so I plan on reading the story of Christmas to her, as well as other Christmas books, hot cocoa bar with a bunch of toppings to put in it. I actually printed out Advent ideas from Pinterest that we will do but I'm drawing a blank on the rest of them.

Maybe snowflakes? For the 2.5 year old, you could have some snowflakes ready to go and give her stickers to put on them if you don't want her handling scissors...

ETA search pinterest for Christmas crafts - I'm sure there's a million ideas there too!

that's such a nice idea! i was going to suggest gingerbread house making also. or maybe popcorn/cranberry garland? or those paper ring garlands? or they can decorate their own stocking (either real or just a paper one)--you can decide the level of tools that you want to give them to prevent too much mess.

i'm trying to think of gluten free holiday treats, as baking is such a nice idea. maybe some holiday themed rice krispies, like with red/green m&m's mixed in?

I'd like to have my nephew (4) and niece (2.5) over for a fun Christmasy afternoon, and hopefully make it an annual tradition. I don't have any kids yet and although I've babysat them often, I've never done any sort of special activities with them.

Any ideas for easy (not super messy) crafts or fun food to make with them? I was thinking of doing a gingerbread house or decorating sugar cookies, but one of them is gluten-free.

Thanks!
