Here's an example from when Xander was 9 weeks:

5:00 a.m. - nurse
5:20 - sleep (2.5 hrs - this was still part of bedtime sleep)
8:00 - nurse
10:20 - sleep (1 hr)
11:30 - nurse
12:50 - sleep (20m)
2:50 - nurse
4:30 - sleep (35m)
6:30 - nurse
7:50 - sleep (1.25 hrs)
9:10 - nurse
9:50 - sleep (almost 6 hrs)

So I guess I stopped doing EASY around this point. Looks like I fed him roughly every 3 hours, regardless of his naps. Hope this helps!

I try to follow the 45-60min awake time / EASY rules, but it definitely doesn't work all the time. My first priority is almost always to feed every 2.5-3h (or 2h if he's really hungry/cluster feeding/growth spurt).

So, in your case, I would just try to feed every 2.5-3h, and follow EASY when it makes sense. I wouldn't worry too much if there is a random nurse-to-sleep here or there, or if I have to keep him awake a bit longer to make things work.

We quit easy because of the 30 min nap. It just stopped working because of that - we still followed it loosely but had to improvise more.

@sandy: I didn't really. Somewhere around 6 months, I got the naps longer and then was able to figure it out better.

@sandy: do you think he's possibly in the undertired / overtired cycle? He's not getting enough sleep to stay up for long but he's not staying up long enough to need the long sleep.

Could you maybe work on a longer awake time without worrying how often he's feeding at this point in time?

Try something that keeps his feeds more spread out. EASAE maybe? I screwed this up with mine and followed the EASY when LO was on short naps. It led to snacking and really frequent feeds.

@SweetiePie: so he doesn't seem to have a problem separating feed and sleep. Like when he first wakes up for the day he feeds and has a wake time of only like 45 minutes and then goes down for a nap ok. But his naps are super short right now. So after 45 minutes he's awake and rested enough not to fall back asleep but still tired enough that once we do start feeding he falls asleep nursing which I try so hard to prevent. I can wake him up with a diaper change and then we'll do awake time and he's ready for his next nap 45 minutes from when he woke up (so he's barely been awake and fell asleep nursing between then). He'll go down for his nap without feeding but again it's a short nap. And repeat all day long. I just don't see how to go longer between feedings... :-/

@sandy: Is he happy after his nap?! I find this is the best time to do tummy time if nap was short and he isn't hungry yet! Belly isn't too full so he doesn't puke...lol

I change his diaper and he LOVES to be on his belly on the changer so I let him do that for 5 mins or as long as he tolerates it, I'm right next to him obviously!
Then I try to continue some more tummy/roll time on the floor maybe another 5-10 mins
So that helps before a feed....
Then feed and play/read books or have him watch me narrate/clean...lol
Then Sleep, I can tell.he is tired he usually starts petting his hair or sucking his thumb!

I like EASY and try to follow it, but not to a tee!

When this happened I'd try to keep my guy up a little longer because I knew his nap was going to be short anyway. Then I'd try to get him to two hours before his next feeding. But after a day or two I'd realize that he was going through a growth spurt and give up till he started sleeping again. (Usually a week or so).

With easy and babywise it is easy to get too focused and miss the growth spurts. Don't be afraid to feed him early! Keep up with the easy pattern and he'll likely start taking longer naps again soon. For the first few months it's two steps forward one step back.

Definitely not! J's naps are super short and inconsistent. Basically I'll feed him after about 2 hours regardless, but he also doesn't really get upset when he wakes up.

I feel like the goal of easy is to not nurse to sleep, so I'd say if that isn't what normally happens it's a win!

Hi! This was us for a little while. I would do a modified version. I wouldn't feed after every nap if naps are short, especially if you know he can go 3 hours. The eventual goal is 4 hours so I wouldn't want to go too far backwards (but that's just me - I'm a believer in Babywise and 12hrs x 12 weeks which I know not everyone is). It mgt be hard to do a full 3 hours between feeds when naps are short but I'd get as close as I could.

I think the most important part of EASY is to not use feeding/nursing to PUT the baby to sleep. So keeping them disassociated so that they don't need to eat to sleep. Not necessarily that you have to feed right after they wake.

So a sample schedule would be this:

7am up for the day/feed
Activity
8:30am 1st nap
9:15 awake
Activity
9:45am feed
Activity, even if it's just a book or some very light not overly stimulated play - make faces or whatever.
10:15am nap
11am awake (want to point out I'm assuming 45 min naps - obviously don't wake him up if he's sleeping :-) )
Activity
12:15 feed
Light activity
12:30 nap
And so on

Of course it will never work out this perfectly but I would focus on just keeping sleep and feed separated more than anything. Even if that means he eats in the living room with lights on and then you change him and put him down for a nap in the dim bedroom. Like don't feed him in the dark bedroom where he'll fall asleep immediately after.

Does all of this make sense or am I rambling?

For those of you who did the Eat Activity Sleep You (EASY) routine with your baby - what did you do about short naps? When DS was little we were able to do a pretty good EASY routine bc his naps were always about 2 hours. But at 9 weeks he has been doing short little cat naps and his awake time is super short. So it means he would be feeding like every 1.5 hours which seems like it's too frequent. Do you just always feed after Sleep even if the sleep duration is super short - like 30-45 minutes? Any thoughts would be appreciated!
