I agree that OPKs don't always work. During the cycle that I conceived my son, I never got a positive OPK. So according to the OPKs, I didn't ovulate, but obviously I did. That's why I always suggest charting along w/OPKs just in case.

From personal experience, I'd suggest reading up on timing and what determines the fertile window... I was very clueless about that, and how the window can actually be a couple of days even though online apps will give a week's range.

It's good that her doctor is involved too! If there is any issue that needs treatment, it's better to know it sooner rather than later.

If I were to go back in time, I'd give myself the following advice:

- Don't pee on any sticks! It'll just stress you the heck out!
- Don't bother with charting. It'll stress you out!
- Use Pre-Seed
- TTC 1 week after the last day of period. Do it every other day for at least a week (up to 10 days after).

If I took this advice, I'm positive I would have conceived faster than I did.

I was 37 when my first was born. I didn't do anything extra other than stop birth control, have sex often and start pre-natals. Took us about 3 or 4 cycles. I would recommend opks. We used them the second time when I was 40. Her doctor sounds pretty aggressive which is great in this case.

I'm older so wanted all the info I could get about my cycle while TTC, so I liked temping, opks & my ff app. I think overlaying all of these were useful in making sure my body was doing its thing while we tried to hit EOD or ED BDing in the fertile window. Your suggestions to her so far are good.

For me, temping and paying attention to my body were the most useful things. I never got a positive OPK, so by that I would think I'm not ovulating, but i obviously was. Temping can also help show a progesterone deficiency etc.

Based on the statistics I read in "Expecting Better" - sex every other day and ovulation prediction kits are much much more likely to indicate a pregnancy than temping or other similar methods. I think if she is relatively new to the whole ttc world, the book you suggest and your advice is great and enough. I would be worried I would overwhelm her with too much information and stress her out.

This might not work for her and her husband, but there's always the super-low-tech, just have sex every other day approach. Then you know you're hitting your window.

A friend is on month 3 of TTC #1. I know it's not long but she's 38 and worried. She used some Ovulation kits but hasn't done much else. She also had brought it up with her doc who is doing blood work to check her thyroid and then will discuss fertility meds with her.

I've suggested taking her temp to monitor her ovulation that way. I also gave her the taking charge of your fertility book.

What else can I suggest to her? She wants to have 2 kids.
