I totally get the chills and shudder every time they cough while I ate, but I probably just deal with it because like you, I wouldn't want to make a scene. That's so inconsiderate of the other patron though. Gross!!

@wonderstruck: Yah I didn't do anything, except leave earlier! It wasn't really a dry cough though... it was one of those hacking wet coughs. It sounded like it was somewhere between pneumonia and the bubonic plague!

I wouldn't do anything - for me personally, my coughing is usually the worst after I'm not even sick anymore. Dry coughs can hang around for ages, so I don't make any assumptions about it.

I don't think there is really much you can say. But I hate stuff like that so much, especially if they're doing it near LO. I don't say anything but I do usually give them a mucky look.

I might move away if there was room but as long as they were covering their mouth I wouldn't really worry.

I feel bad though bc my grandma had scarring of her lungs and although she was healthy enough to go out she stopped going out her last 5 years because when she was so embarrassed of having to cough loudly in public.

Um, nothing. But this reminded me the same thing was happening in a public restroom the other day, so my son decided it would be hilarious to make the same sound. AUCHCHCHCHCHCHCHCHCHCHCHCHCHCHCHUUUUUACHHHHHH

I was half laughing and half mortified. Luckily the culprit didn't come out of the stall in time to see us.

I get annoyed when someone is hacking up a lung 3 feet from my food. If I disappear for a few days, I probably came down with pneumonia and am cursing the day I was seated next to Typhoid Mary.

I considered saying something before I leave, but I come here all the time and don't want to make a scene. Plus that's not my style. I'd move or request a new table but this place is packed today, probably because of the snow.

What do you do when someone is hacking up a lung a few feet from the food you're eating?
